In the FAQ, they mention they don’t have an index, they just collect the results from other search engines.

On the settings page it appears that the index is disabled by default and not included in the ordering either. It's a bit confusing here!

It’s currently a tiny “indieweb” index, which is why it’s opt-in right now, and not big enough to be in the ordering, yet.

It’s too small right now, so we don’t allow you to search it exclusively, yet. Eventually it should become a “proper” search provider once it reaches 100M urls or so.

Takes forever to load anything

Not for every YouTube Premium subscriber in populated areas of California with decent internet connections watching popular videos, even with a userscript automatically selecting highest quality. Always instant, zero wait, very few exceptions.

It’s non-Google sites where Firefox may not be as well supported as Chrome, IME.

I use YouTube on Firefox (with uBlock Origin) almost exclusively and this has not been my experience.

Mining is all compute and no IO. Training particularly is heavy compute and insane IO.

They've been putting TPUs in processors for a while now.

There are asics for ai. They're called gpus / tpus.

I would agree. Kumon wasn't my son's favorite thing and he eventually decided/asked to stop. But the repetition and discipline of working at it every day had an influence. It didn't manifest until undergraduate but he ended up switching majors to math and is now pursuing a math PhD. Probably not common, but like learning to play the piano, I think it gave him a comfort with the basics and an intuition that allowed him to explore his own interests.
