If you are unable / unwilling to install an extension, Librewolf includes and enables uBlock Origin by default.

https://librewolf.net/

It is a Firefox fork with sane, user-respecting defaults. Of course it breaks sites that do not respect their users' privacy / agency.

> It's more like painters got obsoleted not because of cameras itself but because what people actually wanted was not artistic mastery and celestial strokes of the brush, they wanted simple, accurate portrayals of life's events.

> Projects I never thought I’d even have the time for are now possible.

Put another way: "Projects I would previously have considered a waste of time now seem worthwhile."

The AI "boom" has also been a net economic loss by all accounts, albeit the finances of the movers and shakers are opaque. The profits are all projected on the far side of a singularity that will make profits irrelevant.

Quake released the day before Super Mario 64.

Those 48 hours were likely the peak of video gaming. Certainly they have yet to be equaled.

Mario 64 was two years ahead of its time, at a time when two years was like 10+ years now. Hardware acceleration, colored lighting, skeletal animation, free camera*.

Quake (World) was a huge achievement graphically but I feel like its real contributions to history ended up being internet play and WASD

Both games were mind-blowing then and are still fun now.

* It's nuts to me that we had to wait until 2004 with San Andreas to get a modern "left stick moves, right stick looks" in third person games. The N64 was 90% of the way there, but didn't stick the landing for whatever reason.

Is that from San Andreas? I’m sure it was around earlier than that.

I think PoP: Sands of Time has that kind of camera control, and apparently that was 2003.

I always assumed it was even older than that. If it wasn’t GTA or PoP, who did pioneer that camera control style?

I’d say it’s just about the only (arguable) flaw in the Mario 64 controls, everything else is absolutely spot on.

Idk man PS2 era was insane too

Of course this depends on your definition of "equaled", but GTA5 is the single highest grossing entertainment product of all time. I'd say it dwarfs all other games ever made to date by a long shot.

In numbers sold alone sure, but that’s like saying FIFA is a better game than Mario 64 because they release a new one every year and… yeah… no.

I don’t understand the logic here. Multiple releases…?

It is doubtful whether anyone can claim copyright over LLM-generated code since it was not created by any human and the "training" does not preserve provenance.

Possibilities range from "public domain" to "the cancer Microsoft accused GPL-licensed code of being". In no plausible scenario does the person who pressed the "generate slop" button become the copyright holder.

> the only thing I took from Discord at all (it's UI is generally awful yes, I agree!) is the support for multiple servers.

To be sure, Discord "servers" are not servers in the sense the word is used in virtually every other context. They are more like group chats that share a hosting location. If anything the hard part for Discord is making them seem disparate enough that someone might rent their "own server".

> Discord is by far my favorite communication platform across anything I used in my entire life, nothing else comes even close in terms of feature set.

It's just yahoo groups that requires your phone number.

Yahoo groups was better because it got indexed by search engines
