Robert Hanssen was a leader in US counterintelligence, who was a prolific spy for the Soviets and Russians.

Motivated people can accomplish things.

Printing of money, coinage of silver, suspension of redemption and a dozen other schemes were used to control the money supply during the gold standard eras.

There was plenty of volatility and inflation during those periods as well. The 16th century saw massive inflation in Europe, and the colonization and destruction of imperial China was driven by currency imbalances in trade.

There’s no law against it. Stamps are not legal tender, so you cannot compel someone to accept - it’s a private arrangement.

These are problematic as well - they don’t have a way to tally the stamps, they just look for the marker and process it. A postal employee at the delivery point may flag it.

Also if you mail stuff this way you’ll have mail inspected for bombs or anthrax.

> "We never reduce model quality due to demand, time of day, or server load."

That just means they don’t reduce model quality for those reasons.

They didn’t mention other reason, for example, “Make more money”.

You can reference the source.

My team experimented with this a couple of years ago with a complex government regulatory body of knowledge.

Google and Microsoft have APIs that will ground with and reference the specific policy documents, which helps. Even then, it was more useful as a job aid for people already knowledgeable of the data than for a layman.

With all LLMs, the quality of the question correlates with the quality of the answer.

I find it irritating that otherwise smart people fall for the constant stream of shuck and jive from Mr. Musk.

It’s all bullshit to provide air cover for his sociopathic behavior and ambition.

You auto-pre-completed my comment.

A friend discovered that one of the more modern pieces of equipment instrumenting those old signals was an ancient WYSE terminal from the late 90s that had been bricked over during a station project.

They moved a booth or something and the compartment it was stuffed in was missed during the cleanout. The thing was working for at least 20 years and may still be there!

I worked with a client that had a cash disbursement system working on an ancient dBase 16-bit application. They had a very difficult to change process that required multiple transactions because the system couldn't represent the dollar amounts appropriately.

It really doesn’t. Public chargers can take care of the oddball issues.

Once you have one of these things, the problems that sound insurmountable turn out to be not much.

I always wondered if ADHD and smoking were related.

I’m ADHD boy for sure, and my dad and his younger sister are both very much not like my aunt, who is more like me. Shes in her 80s now, and was the only smoker - literally smoked cartons a week for about as long as I remember.

I deleted my comment talking about it because it usually goes badly with the HN audience and their preconceived notions.

But I have had the hypothesis (as a layman) that growing around smokers affects the brain of a child, they self-medicate with tobacco, and the cycle continues, and it has for many generations until today when smoking is frowned upon and self-medication is no longer readily available. I don’t think smoking is the cause of all of ADHD, but we’ll eventually learn that dopamine dysfunction has a lot of different causes.

I've had similar thoughts! I grew up around a heavy smoker. My dad told me to never smoke and I never have. But I randomly tried a nicotine lozenge in my 40s and found it such a "lightbulb on" moment that I've been using pouches for a few years now and my executive functioning still feels better for it (though not as much now as in the first two years, alas).

ADHD people get hooked to smoking quite easily. Nicotine's a stimulant after all.
