My understanding is that dumpster diving to get opened food is fairly uncommon. More often it is getting sealed food that was thrown out because it has expired, has damaged packaging, or in some other way is less desirable. So the food that you would eat from a dumpster isn't exposed and probably doesn't smell like a restaurant waste dumpster would.
The data for this for uncommon names seems really off.
My last name is uncommon, so the most popular first names shows 10 names, each at 10%, and my name is nowhere on the list. Searching on Google for my last name shows many results about a minor celebrity whose first name is also missing from the list.
On popular names this probably evens out, but for uncommon names I appear to not exist here.
Yeah, I wonder about the data itself. A similar site shows that there are 230 people in the US with my last name, and I'm the only one here with my first/last name combo (there is apparently one in Canada). Also my last name is strongly Irish, and it showed no percentage of people in Ireland with my last name, but a lot in GB.
I've been wanting to add metrics to a small side project of mine for a while and was looking at Metricfire and Mixpanel.
This announcement actually is pushing me away from Metricfire. The project I am working on now will generate less than 100 data points per day, so paying $30 a month is really high.
For someone who will take advantage of it, the $30 looks like a great plan, but when they say it is for small projects, that just seems like too much for the very small projects like mine.
Bear in mind that this is just the first pricing announcement, and that we're not likely to get it exactly right first time! Pricing is hard, and we're pushing this announcement out there to get more feedback on it.
We're willing to discuss super-small projects and we welcome feedback on our pricing, particularly critical and particularly at the low end. Get in touch, let's talk about it!
I am amazed that an idea like this hasn't been completed before.
I read this article and realized that this is the same idea I started working on 8 years ago as a high school freshman. I just didn't have the experiences or resources to finish it or do it right.
I just dug up the code though and posted it on my blog if anyone wants to see what a freshman in high school wrote 8 years ago in VB6. http://www.ra726.net/blog/?p=119
I can't wait to play this, I've been waiting to play something like it for a long time now.
Just goes to show what you hear here all the time, just ship it. An idea can be great but it goes nowhere if you don't do anything about it.
Scrolls sounds just like Spectromancer, from Richard Garfield and Skaff Elias (of MTG) and Alexey Stankevich (creator of Astral Tournament). You should check it out: http://www.spectromancer.com
Its out now, and I was going to try it like a lot of other people have said, but there is no way to try it for free. The cost isn't very high ($1.58 right now) but with Swype already I don't see a reason to pay money just to try it.
It looks like the 2 different terms are contradictory. We may have to wait and see if they clarify whether you just have to pay the extra fees or if you are completely switched to a paid account if you go over.
Of course, it would make sense if you only paid for the 'extra' charges if you went over. It would be kind of sneaky if they charged you for the whole thing if you went over.
I hope they do clarify this.
They need to clarify the terms, it is unclear if this minimum usage is free or if they will cancel your account if you go over. These are both in their agreement:
"You also will be charged AWS’s standard rates for any use that exceeds the free usage amount provided under the Offer."
"You will become ineligible for the Offer if, ... (b) incur fees for use of the service that exceeds the free usage amount provided under the Offer. ..."
