Reddit is not crazy because of moderators. It’s crazy because it attracted the wrong crowd and gave them all the exposure they can dream of. Have you checked r/popular? It is filled with memes, celeb gossips, aitah posts, random web links about trump, twitter screenshots about Reddit posts.

R/popular used to be an interesting place to discover new forums. But now it’s just a handful of subReddits showing up again and again - Reddit is just a pigpen, with the same mud slinging by the same pigs.

With no context on who you are, where you live, what this strike is - what the fuck am I suppose to do with this tell HN post? Do you ignorant bastards just assume everyone is from the same 4th world shithole place from where you are?

If you can add some inkling of details, I might empathise with what you are doing, heck even support you. But if you want to be a twat about it, then I wish you all the suffering in the world.

The other commenter is right, this place is infested with Reddit retards.

> As someone who's contributed to Wikipedia and seen how the sausage is made: that's stupid

What is stupid is considering that only paid publications are citeable. This sort of thinking is malicious and frankly borderline retarted. You don’t even understand the point of the article.

From the article: > Public service, like contributing to Wikipedia, goes largely unrecognised, if it is even counted at all

That is because commenters like this one don’t want people to have unrestricted access to education or resources. Of course it’s suits their propaganda to yell that Wikipedia is unreliable. Wikipedia is one of the best things about open Internet. There is no reason for it to exist, but yet it does. The world will plunge into despair if one day resources like Wikipedia vanish.

Sites like wikipedia, Internet archive should be treated like rare gems. Academics and others do have a duty to preserve it.

Cool. You marketed your video on social media? But its chicken and egg problem right. If you don’t have enough followers anywhere, you won’t get visibility from anywhere. But I guess when starting out, it depends on your first messaging.

For general conversation, maybe less. For artistic expression, like translating poems or stories, maybe not much of change. Poems need to capture an emotion suitable to the culture represented by that language.

Americans are happy online cheering for people getting killed, maimed, tortured or otherwise suffering in other countries. Heck, even within their own neighbourhood. They come together online in droves posting memes and pimping themselves to advertisers. This article is using an old fashioned notion of what was social. Their social activity has not declined, atleast on Reddit. Or youtube. Or twitter. Or TikTok. Or bluesky. Or instagram. Or……

What a dumb take. That person is not the president of US to go shake hands with every one. They just said what they experienced. How is that invalid. It just proves that persons point, Americans are close minded, your comments itself proves that.

> due to a recent EU regulation majorly backfiring

And why should a regulation in EU affect rest of the world. Or for that matter, any US regulation. The arrogance of these nations and the ignorance of tech companies is ruining the entire Internet.

Because making things everywhere compliant is cheaper than having both a non-EU and EU versions of software. See also: Brussels effect[0].

It's simple economics. The companies are also allowed to either do special versions to comply with local laws or even to pull out of the market. They just choose not to for reasons.

Sure, American courts ask for age verification, the entire world needs to comply now. Then people wonder why so much surveillance. You can’t see past Brussels effects, because ignorance.

> It’s easy to be optimistic when you're sitting on millions (dhh).

It’s natural to be pessimistic if you are unskilled. Your ability to keep your job is directly proportional to how good you are.

Nobody believes that

Some people live in gutter, to them, they believe world is always dirty.

I have always wondered, what will companies do, if the law changes. Will they still "care" for the consumer, or just "comply" with the law.

Yes, most famously the diesel gate, european automakers cheating emission tests, [3] because EU invited companies to self regulate their lab tests.

World used to believe companies used to care for them, before snowden showed up. Even now people are still surprised, when companies like LG get caught doing illegal stuff. How long before there is a scandal in EU? Fool me once...

As much as i like to believe EU "cares" about the consumer, its really stupid for someone to blindly put their faith in Mullvad. Zero trust. When you are online, you are on your own.
