I’m curious about the condition they’re usually in when they land.

I remember reading that there were actually about 25 General Lees. Pretty much every jump totaled one, and they'd swap in another, and haul off the first one to get fixed (or junked).

They also re-used a lot of "stock" footage.

It drives on everyday streets.

If you want that, Terrafugia has been around for a while - but you still need to drive it to an airport to deply the wings and take off. (Flies for rather more than 3.5 seconds, too :-)

Not the one that was demonstrated yesterday.

They couldn’t get a permit from Hot Wheels in time for a better demonstration.

Does it?

I think people are too quick to forget “Stanley” from Stanford.

Stanley was POC for self-driving. What concept is this demo proving? Genuine question here, I don't claim to know everything.

I would think the only real application would be military, which is probably not what they were going for. This one was just for fun.

the only reasonable applications are in showbiz. It's a movie atunt, a theme park ride.. nothing actually useful.

Movie stunts and theme park rides are useful. Entertainment, shared memories, and good stories are real value to society, even if they don't move anyone from A to B.

That's the idea Elon capitalises on with showmanship. The story is worth more than the substance.

Unfortunate language/protocol name reusal. Watch out for these.

“Required several coordinated actions” is the key moment for reflection.

Maybe they prioritized it low, assigned it to a group of 3 devs, and it functioned the first time they demoed it to management, so it shipped. All other devs would’ve been working on their in-house software.

I haven’t heard of a single software job in the last decade that offers anything resembling “training”. You sink or swim based on your previous knowledge, what you can glean from the codebase and coworkers, and how skilled you are at self-teaching.

Does Postgres no have online backup built in? All of the other major DBMSes do.

See the documentation: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/backup.html

all of these various 3rd party backup tools use these things. Mostly it's QOL stuff that you get from a 3rd party tool. We use barman, very happily: https://pgbarman.org/

Hopefully barman has some longevity being under EDB assuming some hyperscaler doesn't gobble them up

Barman has been around since 2011, released under the GPL. If it does get ruined by someone, I'll replace it in my stack or fork it for maintenance myself. I'm not very worried though.

EDB has been in private equity(PE) hands since 2019 with out managing to ruin it so far. The ownership in PE hands seems to be pretty stable, so it doesn't look like the typical pump/dump mess you often see from crappy PE money.

Postgres is very "unix-y" in that everything is a separate tool. It has backup interfaces and commands but doesn't ship with a comprehensive backup management solution.

It’s the same as trying to tell everyone to stop buying gasoline for a day.

There are worse things, like switching off light and not using appliances for an "Earth hour", while making the power grid shedding the excess capacity frantically.

If you want to make a difference, do something small, but do it every day.

Once a week would be a good start. Like practicing jews do.

Yeah, I don't like these gestures that are tied to a specific day. It's blue tribe signaling with no real sacrifice necessary.

I believe the "minimalism" movement has been far more impactful in the long-run despite fewer adoptees, just by being a trend that capitalized on the benefits in its messaging. Those who optimize for minimalism consume less, but constantly.

My phone is always with me when I drive and has a data connection that a car can tether to.
