Are you really gatekeeping the word 'Holocaust'? The late Victorian Holocaust fits many definitions of the word that are documented in sources like Merriam-Webster. I find your gatekeeping of the word holocaust offensive to survivors of all other non-WW2 holocausts.
Also, why can't capitalism be capable of genocide?
Yeah, we have never had what the Greeks would consider a true 'demos' in the U.S. (besides maybe at our founding) so democracy might not be a good word for our system. Its more-like enslavement through the tyranny of the majority.
"Of course, for many reasons, we should try not to drive species to extinction."
I disagree with your statement that "it's just basic moral intuition." You really think that we shouldn't be trying to extinct the Guinea worm? You might want to do some protesting as humanity is actively on a mission to drive the population of that species to 0.
The more interesting question is why are some species OK for humans to extinct and others are not? What makes humans such great arbiters of these things and why does "morality" only seem to apply when convenient? Who says a Guinea worm has less right to exist then your pet dog? Who decides what is good biodiversity and what is bad biodiversity?
"I think we will take action but unfortunately it will have to be after things get a lot worse because that is really the only way to get people aligned."
FDR? The American Monarch who served 4 terms in office? Good riddance, I'm glad we passed the amendment and don't have power hungry pseudo-kings that can serve four terms anymore.
I dunno, we share an earth with North Korea who has nukes... which perfectly fits your "same train car playing with a grenade" analogy, but we don't do anything about it.
Are you gonna continue to tolerate it? Or are you gonna stop them from playing with grenades in this train car we call earth?
