LLM and full rewrite are a recipe for cooking something that still has flaws but also doesn't work that well. The root cause is that PDF is an old format from a more innocent era. A new document standard that keeps up with the technical and security advances, learns about the lessons PDF taught us, and allows for easy conversion from old PDFs, would be the ideal solution.
Who am I kidding, I think the PDF format will outlive us.
They work in GPS contested environments by reverting to expensive INS and TERCOM systems.
The US had expensive systems because INS and accuracy is expensive without GPS.
GPS will be denied in any future war environment. That's why we stopped work on things like the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb. It was useless in Ukraine due to GPS denial.
Theoretically, assuming you get the supply chain optimized - this would be the biggest challenge, as US manufacturing has taken a nosedive after decades of being out-competed by lower-wage countries (and free capitalism being more than happy to save costs by moving production to said countries)
US manufacturing is bigger than ever. However it is concentrated in highly automated areas, and high value add. The share of labor in manufacturing has taken a nosedive. The manufacturing is still here though.
Eh, maybe. But even if you’re right, would anything short of an existential threat to US soil result in that capacity being re-tooled to make armaments?
I think the spectrum between where we are now and “existentially threatened wartime economy” is nonlinear: if there’s not an existential threat, but there is instead a popular foreign war (e.g. post 9/11), the fraction of defense economic capacity that gets unlocked is very small—still pretty close to what we have now. Which is a lot, but it’s far from efficient.
There’s already a turn around. It’s the Covid policies at play and refusal to hold back failing students. My local district is already starting to see test scores improve
They’re just adapting to be better at teaching to the tests. Those tests are the yardstick which grade the schools, and the school admins and teachers must pass them sufficiently or else they’ll be replaced with others who will. So there has always been shenanigans where they exploit their foreknowledge of the test contents to help kids be prepared for very specific things, instead of teaching them thinking skills.
Tests that legitimately are attempting to measure the thinking skills of individuals aren’t going to see improvements, I predict.
