In my mind, the idea of AGI running amok isn't literal, instead what it enables;
Optimizing & simulating war plans, predicting enemy movements/retaliation - prompting which attacks are likely to produce the most collateral damage or political advantage. How large of a bomb? which city for most damage? Should we drop 2?? Choices such as drone striking an oil refinery vs bombing a children's hospital vs blowing up a small boat that might be smuggling narcotics.
A key detail I found lacking in this article was the manufacturing cost difference. It mentions that it is more expensive, but no indication of how much more expensive.
A lot more expensive right now. But silica fiber manufacturing has been optimized like crazy for 50 years, so that's not a surprise.
From a high level, the preforms are a lot more complicated, and I imagine the draw process might be more unforgiving (in terms of size fluctuations of the cross-section), but I don't see anything that is going to be prohibitive or that will make the fiber itself 10x more expensive in the long run. Most of the cost of an undersea cable isn't in the silica anyway...
People generally don’t like being interrupted by “smart” comments, be it by an LLM or by other people. It requires tremendous contextual and situational awareness to know when it is appropriate.
> And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Clippy, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
> Revelation 6:8 (parody, please @God don't convict me under the "don't EVER rewrite ANY of Revelation, specifically" clause in Chapter 22, please!)
I was definitely being tongue in cheek, but technically speaking I think most blasphemous acts aren't harmful, it's the response to those acts that gets people hurt.
This practice is referred to as Mithridatism. Snake venom injections will help develop an increased metabolic tolerance, but this not quite the same as developing a vaccine. Bill Haast injected himself for years with gradually increasing quantities of snake venom. His blood was able to be used in place of anti-venom.
From [2] “ All natural uranium today contains 0.720% of U-235. If you were to extract it from the Earth’s crust, or from rocks from the moon or in meteorites, that’s what you would find. But that bit of rock from Oklo contained only 0.717%.”
I find it interesting that the .003% difference in U-235 was a large enough deviation to attract attention to Oklo. Thanks for the link
I don't find it surprising at all considering how highly regulated anything involving uranium is: mining, storage, enrichment, actual use as weapons or power generators.
Look what effort we went into the last two decades trying to stop Iran from developing their uranium enrichment infrastructure.
Then back in WW2 we did a complete covert op to sabotage the heavy water (used in enrichment) generators in the mountains of Norway just to stop the Germans or Stalin from getting access to weapons grade material.
Hell, they only even had some tons set aside by accident to enrich in the first place.
Anyways, finding already fissled uranium material probably set off many alarm bells at the Pentagon and the Atomic Energy Commission in 1972.
That article linked does not completely rule out MOND. It is a great article, but it even mentions several difficulties that complicate their observations.
What you're seeing there labelled LPDDR5 is the memory /controllers/, not the memory itself. The silicon area for the amount of DRAM we're talking about would dwarf the IC you're looking at -- and the 3 nm process that the logic is made on is not compatible with deep-well capacitors used for DRAM. There's a significant amount of SRAM on the chip (the SLC blocks, and many other cache blocks), but orders of magnitude less than the external DRAM we're discussing.
No current MOND theories account for the state of our observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background, or the ratios of "things" left from nucleogenesis. The biggest gotcha for MOND is there's no way to reverse the direction of gravity, which would be needed to explain large scale structures without dark matter. (With dark matter, you see things moving toward where the matter is. Absent dark matter, you see things moving away from where matter is, because there is only ordinary matter.)
I'm not sure this is a fair comparison. The M2 was manufactured using the considerably more expensive N5P technology node. The 28nm cpu in the rasperry pi 4 was designed using a value node specifically to drive down price / transistor. EUV lithography is extraordinarily expensive so paying a premium for it seems appropriate.
