I still listen to it a lot. It's one of my favourite albums of all.

Slack flickers a lot for me, no idea why. I haven't updated macOS yet because I don't love the look of the new liquid glass stuff. I think this makes me 2 majors behind now...

Fairly common in houses with the space for them, but they often come in washer/dryer combos if you don't have the space. These are about as effective as using a hairdryer to dry your clothes and take about 3hrs after the initial wash.

The tumble dryer I had in the US could do a full load dry in about 25-30 mins. Maybe it was significantly more wasteful in terms of energy.

Editable from field is also the only reason I was using it with protonmail. I can't remember if it was a protonmail limitation or a Thunderbird one that meant I had to pre-add any email addresses before I could send any messages from them though.

Now I'm on fastmail, the from address is an input box that I can put anything into.

The Thunderbird from field is free text. You get a warning about your server having to support it though.

Ahh yeah it was probably a protonmail limitation then. Or maybe needing to manually add to both proton and Thunderbird was the friction I remember.

I'd guess it has something to do with Proton Mail's End to End Encryption. They might generate separate keys for each email address or add DNS records for autocrypt.

If by "input box" you mean "drop down list" and by "anything" you mean "any of my account's configured email addresses" then yes.. but FastMail doesn't just let you put anything in the From field - on the web or Android as far as what my subscription shows me.

It definitely does for me in both web and android. You can setup specific hardcoded aliases for routing purposes but I have a wildcard/catchall and I can put anything in the From when I compose or reply to an email.

So by "anything" then you mean "anything under a domain I have a catch-all configured", which makes sense since you've proven you own that.

Ahh yes. Anything in the user section of the email, not the domain. This was not possible to do on protonmail.

I've been doing this as well! It's always 6pm-7pm for me which is when my Cosy tariff has the peak rate anyway, which I try to not use. So for no behaviour change I normally get 1-2hrs of free electricity on a Sunday morning! I got 15kWh for free this week by having the immersion, heat pump, washing machine and tumble dryer running. Not bad for 0 effort on my part.

Why does this site need JS at all? It appears to inject all of the other languages via client side JS. Why can't they all just be served from the server?

To minimize their hosting costs. They get a large amount of automated traffic that won't actually render the content, so moving as much content as possible out of the initial HTML document is more efficient.

Yeah I was wondering this also. I had no idea they had some shared blob (or maybe they have source code access) that runs in all of their cars. Would love to read more about how this process works if anyone knows!

Wonder if they all get given a thumb drive at the start of the weekend with the latest patch. Release notes saying "library updates and bug fixes, now go drive 200mph around a track! Have fun!"

> The PS5 may be my last console.

I'm in agreement with this. I'll likely do some kind of Steam Machine or self-build version running SteamOS. Would lose some exclusives but I don't think they're worth losing my freedom. Paying the money for a computer that I can't actually use leaves a poor taste.

Like GP, I too have been on PlayStation since 1, had all of them on day one, and still have most of them, but PS5 is likely to be my last. I haven't played anything on it since Ragnarok, only my daughter (7yo) uses it occasionally to play Astro.

With Sony's recent moves combined with a lack of games I actually want to play (Laufey might be my last on PS5), I can't see my buying a PS6, particularly with no disc drive.

I have a gaming desktop that runs CachyOS and I game on Steam as well as an ROG Ally running CachyOS and a gaming laptop for my daughter to play Minecraft running CachyOS, as well a reservation for Steam Frame, awaiting my order email.

I'm going to go back to PC gaming, buying on Steam or GOG (DRM free) where possible, and encourage my kids (at least my daughter who's into gaming) in the same direction.

Sony's PlayStation division in particular is no longer about gamers, it's been coming for a while, so I think done with them.

If we manage to keep the dev tantrums/planned obsolescence at bay, all you will need, if the game devs or game engine devs are competent, is a lean elf(glibc)/linux distro: a set of glibc libs (interwined with the system ELF loader), the vulkan loader, libasound, a wayland compositor, and related linux userland interfaces.

In the future, we can expect a much simpler file format to replace ELF for CPU executables and dynamic libraries (ELF is beyond obsolete and overkill on modern hardware achitectures and its complexity is source of many issues), and maybe pure and standard GPU hardware command instanciable ring buffers, but that's much further away in the future, as we "don't know yet" (but we do for CPUs), and we still could get GPU vendor specific hardware command instanciable ring buffers (it seems this how the PS5 works).

Yeah, at least since Steam Deck launched & especially with Steam Machine now also being available consoles really don't make any sense.

All the lazy complaints about "I want it to just work", "I don't want to build & maintain a PC" etc. really make no sense any more.

And arguably the breaking point has been much sooner, with the PS4 & Switch both selling you back commodity hardware (x86 APU with FreeBSD for PS4 & ancient NVIDIA Tegra for Switch), just totally locked down, user hostile & with overpriced games.

You could buy another one used if they aren't ridiculously overpriced just so you can play exclusives. Airgapped, what runs runs, what doesn't run doesn't...

Ironically Larry David always seems to be at dinner parties in Curb. Maybe it's a wealthy person activity or maybe it's just comedy gold coming up with a new reason why he pisses off the host and gets kicked out again.

Same as UK farmers voting for Brexit whilst being beneficiaries of EU subsidies for farming.
