It would be great for there to be more competition. But the reality is that SpaceX is in a different league - why focus on knocking them when there isn’t another alternative ??
> the reality is that SpaceX is in a different league
They aren't delivering, so maybe not. People on HN state the SpaceX talking points like they are reality. It's an Internet mob; there is no room for any serious examination of the issue.
Even if the bet on Starship fails to pay off, the existing Falcon 9 program is both (1) the dominant launch vehicle in terms of sheer quantity, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of missions and (2) the only system with a reusable first stage. Dragon routinely ferries humans to and from the ISS (and other trajectories) and no one blinks an eye.
How do you square that with "not delivering"? I don't doubt that China could surpass them in the next 5 years, but nobody else is realistically close to doing so.
I'm all for anyone making progress. Is another company doing similar things more quickly? Dig into what Starship is and you will see how ambitious their goals are.
You don't need to get everyone to coordinate. You need politicians to not listen to the lobby of home owners and real estate companies worried about their investments (in other words, ignore the NIMBYs). Change the zoning laws, incentivize developing mixed use, prioritize pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and stop prioritizing cars and parking.
Walkable cities are actually illegal in much of the US due to zoning laws right now. The reason you don't see shops in residential suburban developments is not because there is no demand, it's because it's literally illegal.
Having walkable and bikeable destinations is compatible with back yards. It just needs to be legal to build it.
In general, I believe that it's the highway lobby who shaped the US into what it is today, not the NIMBY people. I think they have much more power than nimby, even if in certain situations, they seem to be on the same side. So what I say is that industry interest weighs more than voter interest.
Instead of reading about him, try listening to him speak or reading what we writes. You might still not like him but at least it isn’t because someone told you to not like him.
I agree and I’m pro vaccines but want the choice on if/when to vaccinate my kids. I believe there were election discrepancies but not sure if it was stolen. I felt the ZeroHedge article about lab leak was a reasonable possibility. All these things were shutdown by the powers that be (and this was not Trump’s fault). The people shutting down discourse are the problem.
You pretty much have the choice about vaccinating your kids. You might not be able to send them to public school without vaccinations though, depending on your local laws.
If anything, I think we're even closer. It feels like the current administration is stifling speech more than ever. It's open season on people who don't proudly wave the flag or correctly mourn Charlie Kirk. People who dare speak against Israel are being doxxed and in some cases hounded out of their jobs. Books are being taken off library shelves on the whim of a very few community members with objections. And all of it is getting a giant stamp of approval from the White House.
