i'm guessing he means "and thereby putting a neighbor out of business."

recycling isn't convenient, but people do it with an eye to the greater good.

it's not hard to imagine that an Amazon monopoly is not for the greater good.

I agree entirely that shopping on Amazon is immoral, but it's hard to understand how that extends to ALL online shopping.

>Can confirm: After turning it on, we would enter the magic three binary instructions

that's not quite confirmation that assembly is source code

The point is that if we can put binary directly into RAM, then what is assembly if not a programming language? Assembly is source code in a programming language that is turned into binary by a compiler called an assembler.

If you don’t feel that toggling the binary 16-bit words into RAM demonstrates that binary is what actually runs on the hardware, and that assembly is source code for a binary, well ok. I find it persuasive.

assembly language is a language.

machine code is a language.

they are isomorphic, but different. assembly language (source) converts to machine code (destination).

assembly is... source. code.

machine language is not, unless you consider vliw or microcode, useful to think about but doesn't extend the analogy already in place.

curious, how do you pronounce the color fuchsia?

I like to use https://youglish.com/ when I have a question about English pronunciation.

Thank you, just a wonderful website for learning pronunciations!

that's not what I was asking, I was asking Mr. Fuchs his pronunciation of the color named after the fuchsia flower named after the biologist Dr. Fuchs.

F-you-sh-uh

his last name is Fuchs, pronounced fooks.

The fuchsia flower (the color comes from it) is named after a biologist named Fuchs.

I personally call the color Fuchs-ia as it should be.

my question of him was more interesting than your answer to me

people are up in arms about AI/LLMs now, but I'll bet 50 years ago Knuth would have been excited a about the prospect of algorithms being so capable.

Indeed he seems to be excited about it now, after Claude Opus 4.6 solved a problem he'd been working on: https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/papers/claude-cyc...

note "now" is April 2026

in the case of many economic areas of life, you can increase your income and you can find better prices for things. What's special here is when those same people look at municipal governance and can't see that it's a zero sum game and they can't have both of what they want.

>The video was created by the sister of the victim based on what she imagined he would say

you don't know this, she could have been working based on advice from their attorney as to "how to get the maximum sentence"

I am paraphrasing from the decision itself to overturn, so I am not sure what you are made about. Here is what it said:

"Indeed, rather than documenting an event or recording a particular moment, the AI video presents a depiction of the victim and his thoughts created from the imaginings of the victim’s sister."

The attorney thinks the best way to get the maximum sentence is to make an AI video of the victim asking for leniency in sentencing?

What kind of 4D chess is this?

Makes the victim more real (to the judge), I guess. And the family are victims too, the ones who continue to suffer, so I guess the 4D chess is demonstrating what the victims lost.

It eventually makes sense to my brain, aside from the AI part of course. If I'm a remarkably forgiving person my family might both appreciate that about me, and not be remarkably forgiving themselves. And they might say look, we lost this remarkable human being, punish the responsible party harshly.

> The attorney thinks the best way to get the maximum sentence is to make an AI video of the victim asking for leniency in sentencing?

Ab-so-fucking-lutely. This paints the victim in the most positive light. And makes killing them seem even worse.

Again, attorneys understand that a lot of times you're looking for an emotional hook, not straight up "facts". This video made the victim seem moral, empathetic, full of forgiveness... as close to freaking jesus as you can get.

And that other person killed them.

Now go sentence that person.

---

Instead imagine the video was of the victim smoking a cigar, laughing, and suggesting that he'd never forgive him and he should be put to death?

---

Which video makes the jury more likely to actually come back with a tougher sentence? The one where he's a bastard, or the one where he's a saint?

Agree with your post, but judges sentence, not juries.

Depending on the state and criminal penalty (typically capital punishment), juries can recommend sentences.

fair - I've lived in places where juries can recommend sentencing. You're right here.

It worked...

It isn't clear who created the video. It is possible the person who created disagrees with the rest of the family.

Hard to say who was thinking what.

Yeah. The people in these comments aren't following the story.

she was a straight up fox too, and I can't imagine she'd be offended by that, I mean call me a fox I promise I won't be offended.

also, she should not be confused with the other Margaret Hamilton you might recall

username checks out

Yeah, no wonder she married her Apollo boss who promoted her into the famed software lead position.

>Animated ASCII Art...

I deeply, deeply admire the ascii art

>...for Web Pages

No, we got rid of the <blink> tag for a reason

plus, ascii art rendered as images is not really ASCII art any more.

now lets talk about ANSI art: any DECUS heads here who can find the JACK.OFF file for me? I've tried finding it but it's nowhere I've looked. I first saw it at a Vax installation in '85. so good.

if we're doing analogies to other complex systems, forests which have been patched and patched by different maintainers over the year are likely to have a lot of built up cruft, overlapping APIs, bloat, and of course a rewrite results in cleaned up code.

everybody lately is talking about TUIs. what do these people mean?

(I trace my adult involvement with computers back to (a) terminals and (b) where you didn't know if your terminal and terminal driver would support ANSI cursor positioning (stty raw!) so I feel equipped to understand what people are talking about, I just don't know.)

is emacs a tui? is midnight commander a tui? vi? I assume the cli is not a tui? are we not even talking about terminals?

I draw the line at menus + mouse support. Has menus and usable mouse? => It's a TUI.

MC has a TUI. vi doesn't. Don't know about emacs - never used it.
