We definitely prefer to have employees in our NYC, Dublin, or Portland offices. It depends on the role and the person, as you can imagine. I think it would be very challenging to have a Product Manager working remotely -- the job requires lots of meetings.
Personalization feels like the SEO of 2013. In general, personalization is very hard in terms of "what customer wants" -- look at Amazon's "products for you." In the case of Facebook, this feels like an association algorithm based on affinity rather than personalization the way Target was doing it.
There's an assumption here that if you're going to be using your Google Glasses to open a garage door, you'd presumably be wearing them while you're driving. I hope they finish driver-less cars first.
Other uses listed in the patent include: "For example, target device 14 could be a household appliance or device, such as a refrigerator, television, dishwasher, audio system, video system, alarm system, thermostat, garage door, etc. Alternatively, target device 14 could be an office appliance or device, such as a copy machine, fax machine, projection system, security system, etc. Other examples of target device 14 are also possible."
One of my first ideas for Glass is to act as a HUD for driving information. Especially for motorcyclists, having speed information and even rear view camera easily within your field of vision sounds like an excellent use of this technology.
I think that is actually his point. If you don't have to turn your head to the side to look back, at your speed, etc., the road ahead stays at least in your peripheral vision, at most an eye movement away.
I mean, have you seen how some people fiddle with their radios while driving? Personally, I'd be happy if at least a part of those people had the chance to keep their eyes on front while they do that. I might be biased though, due to the german speed limits and not being a driver myself :)
What about checking your blindspots? My 2005 subaru outback has terrible visibility when trying to look back and left (the posts somehow block most of the view). On highway merges, my spouse helps check the blindspot for me or I ask her to look ahead while i crane my neck around.
Congratulations on this. In my experience, however, the initial cost to create is usually the cheapest part of development -- maintenance is expensive. If you have to update your app with a new developer in the future, I hope the initial developer followed good programming practices to make it easy to understand what's going on. I'd encourage you to pay another $50 next time and have the developer explain to you how the code works.
Thanks Greg - very true. Since the goal of this project was just to get something out the door I didn't really think of or plan for maintenance. Now I know for next time! I don't have any ambitions or monetary goals for it which is why I did it super cheapo.
I was able to dig into the project in xCode and make a small update, package it up and re-submit which was a really fulfilling experience to be able to figure it out!
If most mobile designs were better than this, then yes. Sadly while I do most of my casual browsing on a mobile device, I usually wish the web devs would stop trying ... just lower the bandwidth of the original site (I want this anyway) and give me that.
WAP! I had totally forgotten about it until you mentioned the 3210. It's an interesting take though, because there are technologies that are effectively abandoned that might still be pretty useful in certain areas of the globe.
This is a perfect size team for using HipChat. We tried HipChat at Gilt with around 40 engineers and it was too cumbersome because of the number of groups.
I hope they finally allowed users to edit their comments. That was one notable issue I had. Also, there was no such thing as a "private" group because admins had access to all groups.
