If the tech is mostly in the glasses temples, I would prefer to have something that attaches to my existing glasses. I have prescription glasses and a big head, tried the Even G2 smart glasses and the available frames set just too small for me

We did consider that, but it's a bit hard to fit all the electronics well and distribute the antennas optimally and keep that consistent across people and glasses. Best to have a predictable device we can engineer to the needs of this application!

Does it work firing up from the neck? Could you do a necklace style one?

Because this is an input device, I would love literally any form factor other than glasses. Smartglasses had a stigma back in 2012 when I was making them out of duct tape and beagleboards. Behind the head, in the same format as bone conduction headphones (even if there are sensor wings protruding forwards) would be so much better. In fact, combining this with bone conduction would make for a full silent and internal communication device.

+100 on this! My choice of glasses (and prescription) has nothing to do with my choice of how to talk to my computer. Don't risk failure just because you make them depend on each other.

Thank you for bringing this up, as a fellow big head person I struggle to find 'decent' glasses that dont pinch my head.

I was thinking about the even G2 right up to this point.

This isn't any different than getting your lenses put in a VR set. The price of new lenses from an online glasses store isn't too bad, especially if you can afford $500 smart glasses, and now you don't have to worry about a big bulky thing that may fall off your existing glasses.

Yeah it is, because now the typing glasses are an appliance, not just your regular glasses. This makes sense for VR headsets, but it's a large part of how popular Google Glass is today.

GP is saying their choice of the glasses they want to wear all day every day is nothing to do with their choice to have something transcribe words they mouth, the latter shouldn't decide or significantly restrict the former.

Yeah, my glasses are a substantial part of my personal style and I'd be sad to have to go back to something generic looking. It's been a minus with other smart glasses as well.

Also I need to wear safety glasses with side shields frequently and would really rather be able to integrate there. Particularly relevant here since that's also in noisy environments where regular speech recognition struggles.

I concur!

What you said 100%, we are brainiacs overhere so our CPU is large

Can you give a link to your paper(s) here? Sounds really interesting.

So smol is your agent? Do you have a GitHub link?

coming in a few hours

you can follow this org in the meantime https://github.com/smol-env

Wishlisted! Looks great

same, I'll definitely pay for that

I wouldn't mind if similar _common_ words are mixed up. But the current state of the iOS keyboard and also gBoard is that it sometimes just makes really unhinged suggestions (at least in my native german). Words I never used before and that I didn't even know existed. I think a small AI layer on top would probably fix that, just the likelihood of next words multiplied somehow with what I possible could have swiped.

My guess is that an AI layer already present _is_ the reason you're seeing these unhinged suggestions. Earlier generation iOS keyboards were much more accurate and reasonable.

In German, it's also extremely annoying that even common compound words will not be suggested. Google Keyboard has somewhat improved here, but FUTO Keyboard still drops the ball on this completely.

What'd be nice for compound words particularly in German is a way to enter them separately and have them merge either automatically or as an option above the keyboard.

Eg enter Bürger Dienste and have it autocorrect to Bürgerdienste. Or even Führung Kraft and turn it into Führungskraft (inserting an s).

Where and how do you run that? I tried it but somehow I always ran out of context or generation was incredibly slow (mbp m4 pro 48gb).

Even more fitting is the part of the story where a collective of uploaded lobster minds are involved. I wonder if that was an inspiration for the "OpenClaw" name somehow or just pure coincidence.

The fact that the OpenClaw creators seemingly missed that parallel tells you everything you need to know about the project.

One of the robots ("moravecs" (amazing)) in Dan Simmons' Ilium was also crustacean formed: Orphu of Io (and his friend Mahnmut. Beat Charles to that particular weird coincidence-to-be by plus or minus a year!

It's not quite as memorable or as strong a theme as Accelerando laid down. But still quite a serendipity, imo.

Edit: oh, Charlie is down thread pointing out Lobsters was published on 2002, written 1998. Nice. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48163630

Carcinization is a meme these days, guess sci-fi was just ahead of the curve

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/carcinization

All I need to know about the project is that the creators didn't read a relatively obscure SciFi book from 2005?

I would feel the same about anyone working in augmented/virtual reality who hadn't read "Rainbows End" or watched any number of XR-focused anime.

What do you mean, you can't come up with anything to do with these devices? What do you mean, you're hiring webdevs to make another Snap filter? If you're on the cutting edge, I would expect that your knowledge base includes niche, related texts.

The quality of the prose, the actual craft displayed in the writing of TFBook is... Not great.

I tried to read it but couldn't.

Merely existing does not make a book worthy of being widely read. It's insane to criticize the openclaw team for not having read it.

It was a pretty prominent work of the singularity subgenre. At least I remember it being the first one featured in this Popular Science article about the future of science fiction:

https://books.google.com/books?id=yaHf5PavpB8C&lpg=PA93&dq=%...

It was one of Stross's first books, a fixup of older short stories. He gets better.

gets more conventional, you mean. the book is outstanding.

I think he peaked in the aughts - his latest stuff is ho-hum.

accelerando is not exactly obscure!

It was originally called "OpenClaude" before Anthropic told them to knock that off. Pretty sure "OpenClaw" was eventually picked just to be petty.

No, it was Clawdbot, then Moltbot, then OpenClaw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenClaw. It had the "claw" related lobster theme from early on.

Maybe coupled with a nod to manus-mania?

There is a similar experiment where a famous violinist plays in a subway station. Nobody really notices or appreciates him and his music. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hnOPu0_YWhw&ra=m

Well you can sell your old MacBook. And they hold their value pretty well. So I don’t know if framework would actually come out ahead financially.

I just did a quick check: a 2022 Macbook pro M1 with 1tb and 16gb ram goes for 1119 euros on eBay. A new M5 mbp with the same ram and disk is 1899 euros, so 709 difference. And you get a whole new machine not just a cpu upgrade.

Yeah, they hold up their value amazingly well. People keep mentioning biodegradability of Framework, but in Macbook world it's basically a non-issue if your old machine is still usable.

On the other hand, if something fails out of the warranty, this is where you win with Framework.

What’s the advantage of buying a used MacBook if, since they hold their value well, it won’t be much cheaper than a new one?

Because they are indeed still cheaper? I'm not sure what you're getting at with your question. You can look up values for older Macs if you just don't want to believe it …

Why wouldn’t I want to “believe it”? Isn’t that the premise my entire question is based on? I’m not sure what you’re getting at with your misdirection.

They also hold their performance well so for some people it’s worth saving a few hundred bucks plus sales tax by buying a used one.

Its like a Tesla, their values only go up. Stop asking questions, this is a legitimate investment.

An investment lol

Wasn’t cache time reduced to 5 minutes? Or is that just some users interpretation of the bug?
