not just going to paste in my password!! i'll dm you

No worries, we’ll be back at the takeover stage in another 6 weeks

Local quality is very bad

Another position that largely misses the point I think. There is no absolute positioning on this - LLM assistants are applicable at most stages, whether you need to maximize your own judiciousness or maximize velocity depends on the current problem, and you.

Open source (classical) & use-restriction is kinda at-odds, so it doesn't really make sense. That's not to say people don't do it - you can restrict the software however you want, it's just not open source (maybe look at some equivalent of Ethical Source?)

If it happens or it doesn’t then it must be 50/50 odds

A smart person just said: my hypothesis that event is likely happen! It happens 90% of the time!

Some time passed, the event did not happen. Same person said: ok, 50%, either happens or not.

Some time passed, the event did not happen. Same person said: all my previous predictions were correct, now let's apply Bayesian update: (1-0.9) * 0.5 / 0.5 = 0.1, so now posterior belief that the event is likely to happen drops from 50% to 10%.

Nah this is too complicated I think

I'm not a statistician, but I'm pretty sure this is not how odds work. "Either I win the lottery tomorrow or I don't!"

Sounds right to me, honestly people make stats so much harder than it needs to be

“Objective truth” - I’d love to know how one goes about this, feels like a Nietzsche reading here would be helpful

Objective truth isn't something you can know, but it's a destination that must exist for pursuit of knowledge/curiosity to have any meaning.

With contradictions you know what is not true, and through knowing what is not true, you can approach what is true. Truth is expressed in consistency, not completeness.

That's why anyone should be extremely suspicious of anyone who is not, or doesn't care about, being internally consistent.

You're getting downvoted because you're retreating into philosophical nihilism rather than actually addressing the points. If you disagree with how people interpret the studies, the studies themselves, or how science measures reality - just say that.

I also love SMBC's explanation of this: https://smbc-wiki.com/index.php/2010-09-23

Sleepytime is the best episode of any show I’ve ever seen

Entitlements, deducted from your paycheck but then not returned to you?

The descriptive term has become a dirty word because the right’s media has been complaining about it so long that lots of folks think they mean bad programs the Wrong People cheat to receive.

I’ve heard people call in to a somewhat-right-wing local radio show to complain that the host was insulting them by (correctly, and not in any kind of judgy context) using “entitlements” to describe things they were receiving. The very-right-wing national syndicated stuff a few clicks away on the dial never would have made that mistake, and are the reason people had that reaction. Those entitlements, the ones you benefit from, aren’t entitlements.

I bet a bunch of people hearing Elon talk about cutting “entitlements” don’t realize it overlaps with—or is even mostly—some things they don’t want cut.

each person should be forced to look up what they already paid in to these programs before arguing or supporting cuts to fund other stupid shit like department of offense or “tax cuts”

I think this shows a fundamental, widespread misunderstanding of space flight in general:

> you’d be developing new technology all along the way

Aerospace does not work like this. Hardware does not evolve until launch, it is frozen in time to allow for testing and flight qualification for subsystems, and systems as a whole.
