PEP 704 is a recent proposal to require a virtual environment by default for any package installer - https://peps.python.org/pep-0704/. Again, you can opt-out if you want.
My guess would be that URLs for the categories eliminated after that period (eg. Books and Podcasts) are more likely to remain stable and available, even if the product was a flop.

Until a better solution arrives. It obviously depends on the context, but that will be an hour for every project/domain I take payments on. In some cases something like this might be a better fit.
