This. So many of the matches are wrong. I’ve also tried a lot of these tools and they’re immature. I hate the SaaS model for consumer software but at least most hold a quality bar I can trust.

To be fair, east and west are in relation to England, not the US.

Trump’s a smelly orange shit but the US at least pretends to have data privacy protections and we can’t legally compel companies to have back doors… yet. I think. It’s very hard to keep up with all the nonsense these days.

> and we can’t legally compel companies to have back doors

In a post-Snowden world where the existence of PRISM is no longer a secret, I'm not sure how folks can keep stating this with a straight face

I'm not sure how knowledgeable folks can keep enjoying their life without burying their head in the sand.

If you pay for a business plan on openrouter (I know, it’s not opencode, just another option), you can geo lock providers if China is a concern.

Agreed.

It doesn’t have to be better, it just had to be nearly equivalent. I’ve been doing a lot of vulnerability work lately (trying to get ahead of the bots finding exploits in our code) and the frontier models feel like a chaperone at a church dance: get too close and they show up with the ruler and enforce the safety margin. Using deepseek and glm and qwen, I’ve gotten nearly equivalent results without the constraints. I still use frontier models for things but outside of a company environment, I’m happy to spend 1/10 the money, get the same results, and not have try and trick the AI into working.

Yeah I've been doing this since even before you could run DS via claude code, it's damn near the same quality with plenty instances where claude had to eat a hat and a shoe and use DS corrections.

American folks really have a distorted sense of reality and few have their own mind, they listen to influencer noise and once self thinkers pick up the quality of things like DS, they will echo the statements.

Did we make it all the way up to average?! Good for us!

Been to Taco Bell lately?

The Beefy 5 Layer Burrito used to be under $1. Yes, that was like 15 years ago, but we're still talking like a 300% increase. Even the regular bean burrito has doubled in price!

Oh. That’s terrible, then. Also probably doesn’t taste 3x better.

I’ve seen kebab prices in Europe also rise from 2-4€ to 8-15€ within five (!) years.

No, she can’t. Cleaning staff ware not hard to find. Cleaning jobs for fair wages are. Our economy works because we negotiate the cheapest labor we can for the highest output. Tech isn’t even different. We give options to people in lieu of cash on the hopeful promise that we’re gonna blow up and be work silly money. When was the last time you worked an unskilled labor job?

I worked unskilled labor jobs for 8 years. Started out making $5.15/hr, got a new job every 9-12 months for a pay raise. Different types of jobs too. My last year I was making $27/hr, and that was 20 years ago.

The thing about unskilled labor jobs is that anyone can do them. The market is very fluid, but the wage is different based on the market, how laborious the job is, and how customer-service oriented you have to be. Reliability (showing up) and consistency (of work product) are your main assets in unskilled labor, and they are rewarded. The idea that you are stuck in a job and cannot move around, especially as a cleaning person, is false.

The only reasonable stand is to advocate for living wages but we’ll never do that in numbers strong enough for it to happen. Tipping has gotten out of hand but so has the cost of living.
