This may sound misanthropic of me, but it has helped immensely for me to view all of humanity as insignificant. Maybe even an anomaly as far as the scale of the universe, or at least an extreme rarity, capable of building societies and machines with more power and influence than our brains and bodies ever evolved to handle.

Perhaps many of us are indifferent because that is our default, and there is no reason we were "meant to" survive this long. If the universe's age scaled down was the length of a human lifetime, we almost went extinct the day before yesterday[1].

Beyond at least that moment, we are very lucky to still be around. There is nothing about us that is special against the vast indifference of the universe. While we may feel special ourselves, against our own atomic understanding of our surroundings, we are not, and that gap could very well be a primary source of our suffering.

That said, it does not stop me from enjoying my time here in this beautiful place and, as Camus put it, raging against the absurdity.

Malicious actors are going to figure it out anyway. They already have. There are good guys who are hacking things to help (like me) and are having immense trouble leveraging models to that end because labs make it hard to prove you're not a criminal.

I don’t have immense trouble at all. Built a ton of useful stuff using their models. I’m not sure what you are struggling with.

Do you expect to be insulated from the consequences of that?

Mostly.

I'm sure the Uyghers will find this reassuring.

I don't care what they change, I want Flock gone. I will not accept that this is "just how things are now".

I want all mass surveillance gone, regardless of the brand.

Yes, people need to mention Axon more, who may be even worse given the broader scope of their products. Axon is replacing Flock in many places that cancelled Flock contracts.

please remember to start locally. If your city/town is using it, please build a coalition and show up to meetings.

also start with your tech selections. way to many people feeding LLMs controlled by global corporations all their details.

This is great. I would love a way to simulate something like possible tree placement and how much shade that may generate over the years. There are some parts of my area that are, despite being cut out of a forest, devoid of trees but are supposed to be "outdoor shared spaces".

Full sun all day at a dog park in August, for example, just isn't a place I want to be.

Site maintainer here. There is a polygon drawing tool in the upper right corner of the map. You can use it to draw polygons on the map and assign them a height. The shadows will update instantly. You can use it to add buildings that are missing from the map, simulate a tree placement or even simulate cutting down a tree if you set the height to 0.

Wow! Can't believe I missed this. Thank you.

Probably a lot of both.

Writing is also a deeply personal exercise for many, and I can say from personal experience that the environment I write in, from the room/place I'm in to the color scheme of my editor, really matters sometimes.

I haven't found a need to build my own editor, but I can see how someone else would.

Red teamer here. We've been doing this for a long time for all kinds of evasion. Storing payloads in Azure blob storage, for example, is an amazingly effective way to deliver malware through network filtering controls.

You can look at more of the capabilities we like to use at the LOTS project: https://lots-project.com/
