Marxism isn't a political ideology?

Cultural left, ie, "woke" and economic left are two very, very different things. Americans have this wonderful way of completely slaughtering their political terms.

What has renaming the master branch got to do with Marxism?

Slavery as class struggle seems a popular method of argumentation, but it's hard to pin down that logic when any discussion of it generates anger instead of explanation.

Good look getting to Mars or exploring space without nuclear power of some sort. It's the safest and cleanest energy source we have have.

Is in his prime code for before everything he made up about langue was debunked?

Not sure, why you attack him with such malice. I don’t agree with Chomsky in a lot of topics, still I believe he’s one of the large, great intellectuals of our time. Listen to his sentences when he talks ... I would have a hard time writing so eloquently (and he just speaks them).

By the way, I assume you mean “Language” not “langue”, or did you want to refer to the social consensus on how signs are applied. The later is not so much Chomsky but de Saussure. Chomsky started in the 60s with Competence/Performance ...

Language is hard :) I know and Chomsky contributed a lot in understanding it better, even though he didn’t reach you it seems.

I think the OP hints to Chomsky’s age. He’s 93 years old, which obviously impacts his talking and presentation skills.

I’m really impressed every time I see a recent video of Chomsky, he seems to still have his full cognition and is still energetic and motivated by his political goals. At his age that’s not a given.

Now convince management that they should purchase a desktop for you. Probably not gonna happen I've tried for years to get a desktop.

Could show them studies and numbers on Musculoskeletal Disorders. Anything over 2 hours per day is surely going to cause fatigue first, then pain, then permanent damage. Loss of productivity starts on day one.

I know some companies what purchased beefy NUCs for the employees.

I wish I believed giving the homeless jobs would fix the problem but I watched my dad who owns a business try and help several local homeless or down on their luck types and more often than not they just take advantage of people then go right back to drugs or worse they have mental health issues and probably will never be able to function in society.

If someone is addicted to drugs they don't get to just stop doing drugs without a lot of work on their part and usually a lot of outside help. If someone has addiction issues you can't just give them a job offer and assume all their problems are solved. No matter how thankful or earnest they are in moments of sobriety their addiction tends to have an overwhelming hold over their behavior.

Addiction is not just an idle habit you kick with some perseverance and self control.

Exactly.

"I tried to help some cancer patients by giving them jobs and the occasional free meal, but a lot of them just ended up dying of cancer anyways."

The day America stops treating addiction as an individual moral failing and starts treating it as a lifelong disease and a collective social failing is the day we finally start to address these issues.

Correction:

They day we start dealing with it is the day when your kids are addicted. Until then, it’s not our problem.

I’m not sure which drug it’s going to be. Maybe Adderral or Vyvanse being gateway into higher dose amphetamines, or something, but it’s gonna have to be a common drug amongst most of the kids before we take addiction seriously.

Even when it's people's kids they as often as not don't take their addiction seriously. With families there's a lot of enabling and co-dependence that occurs. That's in addition to the views that addition is some moral failing or idle habit.

I think issues around not taking addiction seriously or not understanding it are facets of us collectively not taking mental health seriously.

Ask anyone who tried to quit smoking, how hard was it? It's difficult because of chemical dependencies. You need to get the body used to a lower dosage over time and incrementally lower the dosage. That's the only way you can make it work. It's possible thanks to vaping. It would work most likely work with other drugs like heroin.

for the parent

That varies by jurisdiction. But it doesn't matter much in this case, as pressing charges against hundreds of minority parents is just as unacceptable.

Because, obviously, sending the parent to jail will not at all affect the child. Americans' love for retributive justice is really weird.

I'm still waiting on the crisis to materialize. Florida was suppose to be under water 10 years ago and 50 years ago we were suppose to be in a second Ice Age. Oh and the Ozone was suppose to be gone by now.

Sea level rise happens over centuries. I don’t think Florida will have any serious problems before 2060. But Florida is almost completely going under water over 2100 - 2200. It’s understandable that some exaggeration in the urgency is needed else people will not care at all.

And if that sounds hypothetical it means your kids or grand kids have no hope of living in or inheriting any property there. Once the reality hits around 2070 or so property values will drop drastically and there will be a mass refugee style exodus from such areas to others which could lead to stuff like “Build a wall to keep the Floridans out”

>And if that sounds hypothetical it means your kids or grand kids have no hope of living in or inheriting any property there.

95% of people don't really inherit property and many people these days are forced to move for economic reasons.

Florida being "under water" sounds apocalyptic, but as you say, the chance will "happen[] over centuries." Every storm will slowly destroy some part of the developed area and will be rebuilt somewhere else.

To put it in economic terms, what the net present value of losing Florida in 2180? Probably not all that much.

That’s for large parts to be completely underwater. It’s not a sudden event in 2180. It will start by 2060-2070

It started 50 years ago.

Give it five years and you can change the title to When Engineers were Nihilists. "The ironic fact here is that humanism, which began with Man’s being central, eventually had no real meaning for people."

I very much disagree with that quote, so I had to look it up.

It comes from a theologian/pastor who then goes on to talk about why God and the Bible are at the core of human dignity.

Colour me shocked that a pastor criticises a largely non-religious philosophy.

Humanism replaces faith in God with faith in humans. It professed to free us from religion as we were told we don't need a God in order to make decisions. The fact that we never had a God to help us make decisions seems to go unnoticed.

that doesn't make any sense

The alternative to Apple is Google. Which is everything evil about Apple and Facebook all rolled up into one.

Again. You don't have to pick a side. Every one of these companies is doing things you should be concerned about.
