Microsoft skipped Window 9 too.

Samsung skipped an entire range of numbers from Galaxy S 11 to 19.

Looks like tech companies don't like 9...

Supposedly Microsoft skipped 9 because of a lot of hardcoded checks for windows 95 and 98 that checked the first digit

In fact, trying to add features while maintaining backward compatibility with existing messy code is exactly the reason why PHP is so messy.

I hope they clean up some of that mess in PHP 9, but no, they're just going to add $shiny_new_feature and make the attack surface even larger. Like, why does the session handler even care about measuring upload progress?

It's not. The CA in question is an intermediate CA that somehow managed to convince a root to sign their public key.

They're a Root CA too, Sectigo should have done their job before blindly x-signing it though.

They were a root CA.

It's more like they tore down the entire barn.

they haven't tore down the barn, they are still in business.

they should tear down the entire barn

I've integrated with production APIs that tell the client to encrypt sensitive data using an IV consisting of 16 null bytes.

Some people just follow a spec and don't stop to think what that spec is supposed to accomplish.

Yeah, I don't think I've touched mod_php ever since Apache 2.4 came up with mod_proxy_fcgi, allowing dead simple integration with php-fpm.

PHP does need to invest more in the built-in web server, though. Last time I checked, they still recommend against using it in production.

All other popular runtimes provide a standards-compliant HTTP daemon that any other HTTP daemon can proxy to, it's just the way things work nowadays. Insisting on FastCGI limits integration with more modern web servers and HTTP-speaking middleware.

But did they "get the fix out"?

They released some binaries, built for their own docker image based on their own Linux distro. Other people couldn't use Chainguard's "fix" to patch their own systems. The only people who seem to have benefited from the stunt are the hackers who used AI to reverse-engineer the binaries and write exploits.

That was a giant fuck-you to the rest of the PHP ecosystem, nothing more.

Anyone using a non-default version from the semi-official PPA by Ondrej Sury is still waiting for an update.

The launchpad server is throwing 503 errors all over the place, so that's probably the reason for the delay. Sury's own repo has the fixes all right.

Rabbits also happen to be an excellent source of protein for other animals. This helps keep the rabbit population under control in healthy ecosystems.

Unlike Australia, Britain had wolves and foxes for a long time. Not to mention the apex predator, Homo sapiens, who in late medieval and early modern Britain were probably much more eager to hunt and eat rabbits than modern Australians are.

> modern Britain were probably much more eager to hunt and eat rabbits than modern Australians are.

Modern as in today or modern as in, say 1940s?

I can state as a fact that here in Australia my father, born 1935 and still alive and within 20 feet as I type, kept his mother and younger siblings alive by snaring, trapping, and shooting rabbits through the WWII years his father was overseas in North Africa and Europe.

Further, the bulk of the non native population in Australia until recently was essentially composed of "modern Britains" who were so eager to hunt rabbits they're insisted on bringing their cursed invasives here.

The root of the issue here was more the sparse numbers of people hunting rabbits and the vastness of the space sans people the rabbits had for expansion.

Not even the dingos and European introduced foxes in Australia had sufficient numbers to make a dent.

Although it has spawned a lot of papers on cat, fox, dingo, rabbit, bilby, quokka population dynamics and predator - prey cycles.

"late medieval and early modern" = some time between the Plague and the industrial revolution.

"modern" = after the industrial revolution, which implies broad availability of farmed meat, leading to a gradual decline of hunting.

Yes, predation is a major factor in rabbit population control. And I'm counting British people as formidable rabbit killers, so I think we're in agreement there.

We're more or less in agreement, sure - I'm certain that Australians and Britains were equally eager to eat rabbits (during those times when that was a thing), the substantive difference being very few people in a vast land (AU) versus a mass of people in a pocket square of an island group (UK).

Did you eat them as a kid too? Growing up in rural Australia, I regularly ate rabbit in the late 70s and early 80s. It's been a while since I've had one though.

Pretty much - along with fresh and salt water fish, food from the garden, kangaroo, lamb, mutton, sometimes beef, etc - the usual staples ;-)

I remember wild mushrooms, yabbies, eels as well. Prawning with my grandfather in a saltwater lagoon using hand nets and a hurricane lantern.

Scotland at least needs the return to the native European Lynx since long time ago. Sheep are what prevents it, but it could help to put some order in the populations of rabbits, vampire deer, roe deer and red foxes.

Somebody in the Windows team must have realized that they can now vibecode all the missing features into MS Paint without having to dig into the legacy codebase themselves. New brushes, layers, and now rotation.

We all know where this is headed. Sooner or later, they're going to drag copilot into it.

I'm pretty sure Paint has been rewritten at least once, if not twice, since Windows 95. Windows 7's Paint was much more advanced, with far more options. The current one in Windows 11 definitely has a new UI, although the underlying code might be the same.

They already did, there's a copilot button on the ribbon now

I swear to god and I don't know why, but if they do that, that will be my final straw with Windows

Apparently it's not your final straw because they did it almost 2 years ago

I just use the local install of https://jspaint.app instead.

11/10, does exactly what I need it to do.

It sure why the downvotes. Given the number of photopea clones getting vibe coded there really is no excuse for paint to lack functionality found in ImageMagik 30 years ago

Oh, and hear me out: we have now enough bytes to allow unlimited number of syllables in haiku poems!

Isn't it neat? Now this comment can also be a haiku, and MS Paint can be Photoshop.

Yay progress!

Or maybe they could leave it alone, and take the developers working on this and have them fix all the glaring issues in the OS and all of their shit online services. With all the vibe coded apps coming out, I think we can find alternatives to MS Paint easily enough.
