I mostly feel this on Microsoft stuff. O365 browser stuff was always buggy, but last month I had to fight to zoom in on something in PowerPoint. Pagination in Azure ML randomly broke, it took them a month to fix it.

Atlassian is also a bug factory, but I did not expect anything better of them. Each UI update they did to Confluence and Jira just made everything more confusing in the last 10 years.

Holy smokes is the browser versions of PPT, OneNote, word etc buggy, I could not believe that was an actual released product. Random page crashes, refresh loops, etc, all for the crime of using firefox on a mac. The bottom of their test matrix sure, but not exactly netscape on windows XP.

I don't think that much is shared between streets and roads. Roads need all the details about curvature in the article so car traffic flows efficiently. Compare that to the beautiful but narrow streets of a Mediterranean town. Buildings are rarely parallel, angles are odd, but everything is on a human scale, and it just feels good to walk around.

If we have a 9 km mountain on an otherwise spherical planet (r=6371 km), the horizon would be 339 km away. With two mountains having a sightline between eachother the maximum theorethical distance doubles to 678 km.

Exactly.

And it could even be tweaked slightly with some favourable refraction.

Ah, well NASA left some mirrors on the surface of the moon so with some favorable reflection and infinite quality optics, you can theoretically see halfway around the world.

Be careful what you believe from Balázs Orbán, as a Hungarian I can say he is mostly concerned to come up with a ideology to explain whatever Viktor Orbán is doing and not building a consistent model of world politics that drives actions.

Indeed. I think that’s an astute assessment. I listen to a massive variety of perspectives, and as a NATO member I think what they have to say is worth hearing at least. Thanks for your comment — appreciate it.

Thanks for this post! I have been looking for ways to make music in the last month and it helped me find strudel!

This really tells a story about the sad state of android devices, that you have to use third party apps for basic stuff like the file manager to avoid spyware/adware.

I use hundreds, if not thousands, of third party software in my Linux OS and I don't think the OS is in a sad state.

If they want to show that the infrastructure did not involve central planning, they should search for hacks. Stuff that is not centrally planned always ends up with hack where engineer A's domain meets engineer B's.

You don’t need central planning to have everyone making things the same style. Think ancient pottery. There wasn’t any authority there yet for generations in some cases potters styled their pots in the exact same way throughout the range of their culture.

My typical drive to visit family is roughly 125 kms with a 130 km/h speed limit and 125 kms with a 110 limit. If I drove at 100 all the time it would take 25 minutes more. More than a bathroom break I think.

Honestly I feel that driving faster is safer for me, since I tend to zone out if I don't have to pay attention to overtaking trucks.

> Honestly I feel that driving faster is safer for me, since I tend to zone out if I don't have to pay attention to overtaking trucks.

If you don't drive while being sleepy this is just a matter of getting used to it. I used to drive to family visits 160-170km/h, but switched to 110 km/h (or train+bike depending on the circumstances). It feels slow at first, but you get used to it. The same when you do it the way around.

Is cotton cultivation that bad in areas that were not artificially made suitable for the crop by the Soviet Union?

To produce a kilo of cotton (roughly equivalent to a t-shirt and a pair of jeans) takes 20,000L of water. It’s just fundamentally an extremely thirsty crop.

Not to mention that cotton is notorious for depleting soil nutrients, so it is often grown with very large amounts of fertilizer, which also polluted waterways and their outlets into the oceans.

> artificially made suitable

Don’t know what you mean by that but the Soviet having made worse does not mean other countries approach is water-friendly. See https://ris.utwente.nl/ws/files/6843583/water_footprint_of_c...

IMO old reddit it atrociously bad for self posts and images as well. I would not have used it without Reddit Enhancement Suite.
