100$ worth of...?

If people in my IN group, who I trust, kept telling me that student loans would be forgiven, then I'd go get a bunch of student loans too! True or not, some people think its going to happen.

I had no concept of loan forgiveness when I went to school. I still got the student loans for $60K and am still paying them off to this day. There are far more nuanced and varied reasons for people to take out student loans than "their political beliefs convinced them they won't have to pay for it later, those silly out-groupers".

I showed this to my coworkers who are mechanical engineers (I am a software engineer) and it made them angry...

EDIT: It was this+OpenSCAD in general that enraged them!

Why?

Maybe finish them off by showing them Bowler Studio from:

http://commonwealthrobotics.com

It pretty much enrages me every time I try to use a traditional 3D CAD program --- or when I have to pay for one (the annual Veteran's license for SolidWorks, while a nice gesture was a pain, but at least my son was able to use it and a Connexion Spacemouse my sister bought him for his school projects).

May I ask? What sort of software engineering do you do in concert w/ mechanical engineers?

We don't need to change the definition of recession. We can just blame the last guy like we have always done for every politician on both sides.

Or more accurately: we should blame the global pandemic and subsequent economic insanity, which isn't "the other guy" and also probably explains it better than anything else.

I don't get the problem with facial recognition. An argument against a grocery store using FR is basically "How dare you identify me!"

Last I read YouTube is not profitable

It has been a while since I was at Google so the story could have changed I suppose but Youtube was quite profitable when I was there about a decade ago. I'm struggling to see why it would have changed now.

I would assume TikTok and the (unfortunate, IMHO) societal trend away from medium-to-long-form video plays a role. Sure, they're trying to compete with YouTube Shorts (to my chagrin), but I think it's a strenuous competition at the moment. Not to mention things like Adpocalypse and stricter decisions about what content is monetizable, and the knock-on effects of influencer decisions that both of those created.

When politics starts changing words and definitions to manipulate people, sides or groups is when I stop participating. How can I participate in the process if I cant even communicate ideas because the meanings of the words are changing to fit one side or another.

Language is very powerful and if you can control the language you can control thought. Coherent deep thought may not even be possible without language, or at least not to most people. Governments always wanted to control language.

Here are a few changes I've noticed:

"pro life" vs "anti abortion rights" (adopted by NPR recently)

"woman" to include biological men

"quantitative easing" (us) vs "currency manipulation" (them)

"Illegal alien" vs "undocumented worker"

And let’s not forget the big one, “racism,” whose creeping semantic expansion by academics and Tumblr users has consumed and confused Americans since the Obama years.

>How can I participate in the process...

My approach is to simply avoid the redefined/trigger words. I noticed that one of my favorite YouTubers always talked about "the current public health emergency" to route around triggers (and censorship)

The analogy I've used in the past is that there's a company, EvilMarketing.com, which makes up these terms as weapons in a culture war. A war designed to distract the majority of citizens while actions contrary to their interests are taken elsewhere.

Please also be aware of Emotive Conjugation[1], where words are chosen to push narratives.

A recession was never 2 periods of GDP drop. It was taken in the context of everything. Also what's the point of the word if 2 slightly negative quarters don't impact much at all?

What's the point of the word? It's to define the state in a boolean or absolute sense regarding a qualitative measure. It's about like using the word "retarded" to describe someone whose development has been... slowed. Albeit technically accurate to a pedant, we use the term to mean something different & more precise.

Simple, just redefine "participation" so you don't have to communicate. All you need to do is passively enjoy the continuing changes and comply with the unwritten, ever shifting rules to be a good "participant".

Besides, why would anything need your communication? It's not like you're a "stakeholder" is it?

When it comes to governance and politics, everyone is a stakeholder because we are all part of the same system

Can you please present evidence that a definition was changed?

This wikipedia infight on the recession page has nothing to do with redefining its meaning.

TFA is about evidence of efforts to change the definition of a word which is both prescriptive and descriptive. Please fulfill your own need for evidence without interjecting this where a valid conversation already exists.

I am a fan of web bluetooth. Anything that can be run in a browser, should be.

The problem is having a 100k machine sitting idle for most of its life. Cars as a personal property is very inefficient.

Guess you should throw out all those computers then... I'm sure you're not running them at full capacity all the time!

True, but people who are OK with waiting for public transport have all self-selected by moving to or staying in cities that provide these services.

The study mentions that having two parents is a factor in adult outcomes. I agree
