Check out this: https://chatto.run/

That's a nice project, but it differs from my app in a few small ways. The first and biggest difference is that the whole app is built on Flutter and Rust, so without the Chromium engine, the client's PC uses less memory. Then, on the server, I also used Rust, so more performance. I also implemented a built-in music player so the server owner can link a lavalink server, and it converts lavalink stream directly to the voice chat, so no more bots or annoying things

What do you think? Is it worth it?

Read this article with a grain of salt since many people nowadays live in their own bubble.

> Non-engineers are still not shipping prod code.

I heard from many people that at their company, product managers and designers are forced to create at least 3 PRs per week. Initially they started as changing small things but nowadays they implement a whole feature.

Also, interestingly the article doesn’t mention that many companies are now token ranking their employees and creating leaderboards to fire them easily.

This is the reason why I stopped following Gergely. Before he started to get many sponsors, he was talking about the problems that developers are having. Nowadays he became a PR machine for the big tech and startups.

Good to know

The comments here are just another reminder of how US-centric HN has become. Whenever there's positive news from Germany or elsewhere in Europe, people are quick to dismiss it. But the moment there's negative news, everyone jumps on the bandwagon to bash it.

There was an interesting study showing that while social mobility is generally greater in Europe than in the US, the European tendency to underestimate vs American to overestimate it, results in broad agreement that social mobility is in fact greater in the US.

Poking holes in every new idea is a pan-European pastime - it's how people in this region of the world managed to survive despite exhausting its resources.

Surely you can cite the study

Well, it seems their fastest growing market (and largest?) is in the USA.

They, per the article, have set up manufacturing there and a research lab in SF.

The co-founder has also relocated to the USA.

Much of the dismissal I think doesn’t come from a bad place - people see potential in europe, why can’t it a similar market?

Who is dismissing it?

People here work in the US tech bubble. The behavior you describe is indicative of fear.

Good thing then that the chancellor cannot just introduce laws in Germany then. One of the perks of having actual democratic institutions that aren’t just for show.

That's why Chat Control has vanished for good, and isn't going to be brought up over and over again until it eventually passes.

In Germany chancellor is a character who holds a parliamentary majority, and they creativity can and do introduce laws against the will of the majority of German voters.

You seem to have the mistaken belief that democracy is the rule of the majority, which it is not. It is much rather the rule of the compromise, so whether the majority of the population does or does not want something is less relevant than wether a) that majority can organise a parliamentary majority too, and b) whether that popular desire is reconcilable with the law.

Besides, Germany is a representative democracy. There is no unified “will of the people” that isn’t manifested in the existing constitution of the parliament already. And if that’s what you’re hinting at: No matter how often AfD may claim to represent the will of the people, they decidedly do not do so; not even in Saxony-Anhalt.

It's funny how CDU and SPD always find a way to do something against the will of the citizens and find a good explanation. Whether their rule was good or bad is not subjective, average German lives much worse than in before Merkel era, and things are not improving.

You may point to the AfD, but they are just a boogeyman. They don't rule anywhere in Germany, and yet, the government use the scaremongering against the AfD to cover own wrongdoings. At this point, it's like Big Brother blaming the East Asian Empire (or was it Oceania?) and Goldberg for his own faults.

1984 should have been a warning, but Germany (and the EU in general) is using it more and more as an instruction manual.

Rarely the chancellor’s party holds the absolute majority so it’s not as simple as in countries with a the-winner-takes-it-all system.

Mostly there are coalitions that prevent too bad laws.

Sometimes that can also block good ones. Thanks FDP. I hope you are gone for good from any government for being one of the true ideology driven parties in Germany.

I'm thankful to the FDP for all the laws they blocked, forceful vaccination being just one example.

Unless you offer them a promotion ;)

No they need to find a way to glue a chat service onto it.

What is this, 2010? You have to glue an AI assistant to it or you're never getting a promotion

Right now I’m reading Biological War. Before this one I finished reading:

- The Left Hand of Darkness

- The Nerd Reich

- What Happened to Liberal Democracy?

I don’t know why we see Omarchy almost every day on the front page. Do people really want to use a distro from a white supremacist?

I raised my eyebrows at this statement, but I had forgotten that blog post where he griped about the UK becoming less white.

Or I'm sorry Dave where he talks about being mad the LLM won't translate murderous genocidal screeds to Italian for him.

HN is generally attracted to "success", not integrity.

Yes is the only valid answer. The reason is that there's nothing remarkable about Omarchy for it to deserve a fraction of the hype it gets.

Even calling Omarchy a distro seems to be a stretch. The best description I're read is that it is a Hyprland setup for Arch. As far as what a Linux distro can be, this is pretty mediocre. The sort of thing that would get an HN thread, see minor traction, and take the backseat.

But, quite a lot of people seem interested in hyping it. I suspect the reason is just because the dude behind it is not shy about being an ethnonationalist, "great replacement theory" asshole, etc.

Quite a few people here are very fond of those talking points. Thinking about brown people being ethnically cleansed makes them all tingly inside. So, they really want to talk about Omarchy as a proxy.

They ship a custom kernel, have their own packaging servers, ship their own installer, an installable ISO, and ship a bunch of custom UI. That's a distro, all right. Not a foundational one a la Debian or Arch, but that's never been a requirement seeing how things like Ubuntu, Cachy etc. exist and are called distros without issue.

Omarchy started as a pile of dotfiles a year ago. It isn't that anymore, and DHH's intended direction is towards a fully independent foundation distro.

I think that's the main reason why Omarchy gets talked about so much.

In large parts of the internet, open bigotry is thankfully still socially unacceptable. But when bigotry is wrapped up in a software project like this, it gives people posting/upvoting/sharing a level of plausible deniability.

Twitter's still pretty popular.

Yes. For some reason they really really do.

And companies clearly want that as well.

Linux embraces diversity. A vibecoded Nazi distro is just another Linux flavor. There's some irony in all this.

Yet here they don't spend that much time talking about the other gazillion distros out there this days...

Here’s an exact quote:

> When wolves get out of control, you shoot them. When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them. This isn't hard, it isn't cruel. It's the basic logic of self-preservation.

Here’s another, referring to the roughly ⅔ of London residents who aren’t white:

> London is no longer the city I was infatuated with in the late '90s and early 2000s. Chiefly because it's no longer full of native Brits. In 2000, more than sixty percent of the city were native Brits. By 2024, that had dropped to about a third.

the "different thoughts" in question are that certain groups of people are animals and should be imprisoned or ethnically cleansed, so yeah, that's firmly in nazi territory.

No, because when you start embracing the idea of ethnically cleansing countries, you are firmly into nazi territory.

Because people who want to forcibly eject, imprison, and torture brown people are Nazis. Evil exists. We can call it by name.

Which part of omarchy the distro is nazi?

The author.

It seems like a useful distinction (that, yes, is very easy to hide behind if your real opinion is just "I hate people based on skin color", but I have no way of knowing what's in Cleese's heart).

Clear may be a racist or he may not be. His speaking out against cultural practices has no bearing on whether he is or isn't and neither you nor I are any the wiser on whether Cleese is a racist or not and it isn't even relevant in the context of his stance on cultural differences and preferences.

hn crowd has always been favorable to trump because at the end of the day they want lower taxes, but i think a few other ideas have been smuggled along with that

The video referenced in the article contains nothing new; those things have existed for nearly two decades. People simply create similar videos to boost engagement and it seems they're quite successful at it.

It's actually quite the opposite. It became easier to create apps for Apple platforms, Apple also reduced the commission to 15% for small businesses.

Since when do people in Silicon Valley work for a mission?

They work for the love of diarupting anf breaking things.

Maybe I’m looking through rose-colored glasses, but while people need money, there was a time where there was more idealism from the founders and the employees. Steve Jobs could’ve quit business in 1985 after his failed coup; he was rich enough to never have to work again. Yet he started NeXT, and he was able to get people to join his company.

I feel we’re in a timeline in Silicon Valley where there’s little idealism. Employees seek money, and who can blame them when a two-bedroom apartment can easily rent for $4000/mo or more, and when a house is easily $2 million? Leaders seek not only money, but power, and their desires for power have been more blatant in the past year.

Where are the Steve Wozniak and Gary Kildall figures of Silicon Valley these days?

Right? People typically do work for money. That's capitalism.

If I could pay bills with happyness and contributions to society through working for a cause, I would, but that's not reality.

Also businesses seem to think we should be Undyingly Loyal to them without any reciprocity. It's wild.
