Nuclear is a dead end. The technology is dangerous, a terrorist/war target, extremely expensive, makes you dependant of uranium producers and enriching facilities (or, facility as we are not buying from China or Russia), requires a source of water to cool the exit steam back to water to be pumped into the reactor so you are also dependent on the weather, and leaves you with nuclear waste in custody for centuries.
For the same money you can install solar and storage for more than twice the power, way lower maintenance, no nuclear waste left after the business and can produce power from dawn till dusk without needing the favor of uranium exporters or a river nearby.
Rather than comparing construction bills directly, levelized cost of energy (LCOE) incorporates construction, financing, operating expenses, fuel, and the amount of electricity produced.
Lazard's 2026 estimates are approximately:
Utility solar: $40–$88/MWh
Utility solar + storage: $61–$105/MWh
Nuclear: $141–$276/MWh
These are unsubsidized estimates and represent a range of project assumptions rather than guaranteed costs. Lazard specifically notes that its nuclear estimate is based on the publicly available costs of Vogtle 3 and 4, while its solar-plus-storage figure incorporates both generation and storage.
This used to be a pretty standard discussion a few years back when people still were being hired. I never saw any better way to systematically and somewhat fairly test a large number of candidates, so would you kindly elaborate on that statement?
Interesting comments here. I've never lived in a time when there weren't news stories about food recalls. I don't think they can be used as data, though. They don't tell me anything about wether the US food supply is worse than it was last year, or 10 years ago, or if its standing in the world is rising or falling.
The site is fairly politically polarized. However it is not a very large subset participating. Strategically blocking users using a Chrome extension can help you maintain epistemic hygiene. The comments section I see is much sparser and much less prone (though not immune) to human impersonation of robots.
I enjoy forums, so I prioritize spam filtering to preserve signal to noise. Others may prefer to read every cialis ad. I think these two extremes and everyone in between can coexist on the same forum, but in order to do so it helps to have adequately tuned filters customizable on a personal level. In more detail if you care to: https://wiki.roshangeorge.dev/w/Overmod#Philosophy
I was primarily motivated to do this by repetitive commentary which is indistinguishable from bot content, and I continue to be motivated by this.
Curating your news is part of healthy media consumption. You literally connect consume all news. There is too much, and once you find an unreliable source, its generally best avoided.
I agree with you. I simply took umbrage with the characterization of other human beings with different points of view as “bots”.
It’s really no different than the cringy characterization of other humans as “NPCs” often spouted by children. That thinking indicates a sort of complex that is very off-putting.
Given that, this person would likely benefit from exposure to alternative viewpoints instead of further insulating themselves.
It's Friday, so probably a lot of the more well adjusted human beings are a little busy living life.
But yeah, good god people are being absurd.
However, there was similar absurdity a couple years ago, when an article about Costco having to dump a truckload of butter because it was mislabled, with everyone coming out of the woodwork to decry it as obvious government waste making us all poorer.
Which was insane of course. It was one truckload, just like here, and improperly labeled, just like here.
The US system takes the sanctity of product labeling extremely seriously, because the intent is that you can trust the label, and therefore make informed free market decisions! Strictly regulated labeling is a great way to reduce the information asymmetry between producer and consumer, and help keep a market competitive!
The reality is that nobody here is any better or worse than the average on any website that doesn't make you take a test before you can post. That was always true, but it's getting a little noisy. Notice how there is in fact pushback in this comments section to those running wild with assertions and bullshit, and those comments are getting downvoted to oblivion.
That is new and utterly toxic.
How many in this comment section even noticed that this is not safety related?
Let's see some stats on frequency of recalls over the years rather than relying on perfectly reliable human perception and never biased news headline frequency.
Do we need statistics by the administration? Look at the numbers of FDA recalls. And if you think recalls are happening less often, look for food poisoning cases too.
"If I hand you a equation to solve, and you type in the numbers, hit enter on your programmatic calculator, and write down Texas Instruments' answer, you are definitely not dong math." <-- would have been my teachers' attitude too.
Throw in "and when the batteries in your calculator die, you'll need to know how to do it by hand!" for good measure. :-)
I think the difference with the calculator analogies is a calculator just speeds up calculations you could do yourself (granted some very slowly). I can’t type in “sally has 35 apples, and wants to give an equal number to each of her 7 friends. how many apples does each get?” I have to know to do 35/7. But an ai will do that problem solving for me, with zero understanding on my part.
In case anyone doesn't understand the reference, lproven is hoping that Donald Trump, current President of the United States, who has a bit part in Home Alone 2, dies next.
I think "cameo" is the correct term. He didn't wait in line all day with 1000 others to be an extra; he was asked to be in the movie because of how easily recognizable he is, and he plays himself.
as far as i understand it he requires a cameo in any film/show that uses his properties (in this case the trump hotel). he wasn't asked. it was required. supposedly most of the scenes filmed by other productions just end up on the cutting room floor but that one was left in.
He didn't say "dies next" -- releasing the Trump-Epstein files he promised then consequentially being thrown in jail for the rest of his hopefully long long life would be the ideal outcome. Fingers crossed!
