If a prompt can solve a useful math proof, then someone else will find that prompt. In which case, openAI won't get the street cred(wall street) it needs. Nobody is hiding secrets to gain advantage in this environment.
OpenAI cracked these frontier math proofs using models and amount of compute not available to general public. It's not the case that anyone can put "solve Navier–Stokes" in ChatGPT and get solution. Although less well-known problems can be solved with publicly available models.
Indeed. Their model they showed off that was ~5x better than 6 Astra in certain domains including mathematics is not public and I doubt they'd release it. They distill their internal large into their public models.
Not only are the models and compute unavailable to the public, they are unavailable to anyone besides the labs, including the government. We better hope the furthermost tip of the jagged frontier stays in purely theoretical mathematics, because if it strays into the physical world then we may find ourselves in a situation where the power of the labs rivals the governments supposedly overseeing them.
Do you think companies do not hide secrets? I think you are wrong but maybe I do not understand your point of view. However let's see my example.
Imagine: you are a boss of a company and own a powerful tool which can give you a lot of advantages. In short: it allows you to earn more money than competing companies. Would you share this tool to everybody, so that means competing companies could destroy your business or you keep the tool in secret and slowly build empire?
I do not know if OpenAI has powerful LLMs/AI things but I can be sure they do not share everything what they have. I think the only way they could share hidden "powerful tool" is situation where men in black visit CEO and talk with him/her about co-op. Of course CEO is "happy" because he/she can not refuse if you know what I mean. But still hidden powerful tool is hidden but this time another "more important guys" have access to it.
Its more about finding artifically created disabilities. My guess is public key cryptography is solved and the government at least knows. Which is why we had the "export" forbidden noises. Apply a old solution (export controll)to new problem knowledge intrferable.
What's the $-value of some street cred/publicity vs. $-value of finding some optimization trick that reduces training/inference cost by millions compared to their competitors? Of course they're going to keep that IP to themselves.
I think it depends on the situation. If there are profitable applications, they might keep the proof to themselves, but I agree with you in most cases.
as professional with a professional salary, wages are not enough. we need abundant housing. Imagine taking a year or two dedicate to helping your mate through pregnancy and early childcare? Or, taking a year or two get your dating life in order. This second one might be important in city with bad traffic or for demanding jobs. This is not possible right now for 99% of people because housing is too expensive.
Some mathematicians ran some numbers and diferent societies have different lowlying fruit. None of his improvements get societies to 2.1, but will theoretically move them to ~1.8. I'll find the source if people ask. 1. End toxic masculinity (machismo) in middle east and LatAM. No woman who knows how to read want to beaten or enslaved. 2. Jobs and Housing: Europe and America respectively. More three bed-room houses would add kids in California for example. Jobs for young people would children in Spain. 3. End afterschool tutoring and add spaces at universities. In Japan, Korea, China having more than one child means less money for tutors for the first kid (boy or girl). This is the easy stuff. For the extreme right, male literacy is inversely proportional with fertility too. lol! For my lefty friends, women are currently having as many kids as they would like, that's a oppression or tragedy or unfair.
incidentally a few years ago china banned tutoring, but to my understanding it was mainly because most tutoring places were scams, and maybe also because mostly rich parents would spend the money, thus giving them an advantage.
And middle east and latin America have much higher birthrates than Europe, East Asia and the US. I guess most women there must be really unsophisticated (I know you don't mean straight up illiterate).

each cheaper token consumed
to hold the same place

it also has stealth. This is a complete disaster. The only purpose of this stealth ship is to steal leaders and or go inside cave lairs and blow them up.
I wonder is Iran would have gone different if we had captured the Ayatollah instead of killing him. A stealth drop ship like this would have allowed that to happen. The reason why regimes are more likely to negotiate when you capture their leaders is because you might release them. (not a good day for the usurper.)
I don't think whatever is negotiated with Iran's current regime would actually be honored by them. They may commit something to get their leader back, but won't be keeping the promises.
Their self stated goal is destruction of Israel and US. They could have chosen peace and not have funded proxies across the middle east. Their choice of aggression by whatever means they have at their disposal just shows what their long term strategy would be.
They have shown the intend. They just didn't have the capacity to follow through. Once they gain the capacity, they could go extreme lengths. Just see how they attacked their neighbors who were not party to the war.
A very good response to the parent comment and summary of the current situation.
AIUI the Iranian attack on Arab countries is strategic, increasing energy costs pressures the US to stop military action. However the US and allies were prepared with set aside oil reserves, increasing supplies from other sources, and reducing Iran's ability to interfere with shipping.
Major warfare always has tragic effects, but against regimes actively pursuing destruction of other nations, return of fire is a rational response.
The limiting factor for quantum computers is keeping them cold. Is this triple superconductor high temperature too? If not, it's not going to change things much.
I did a bunch of research on similar Tc superconductors back during my
PhD.
7K is considered “warm” from a cryogenics point-of-view because you can just dunk your sample into a dewar of liquid helium at 4.2K. You can even get it cooler, down to about 1K, using evaporative cooling techniques. [1]
It’s getting to lower temperatures than this when things start getting complicated. Eg a closed-cycle evaporative He3 system can get you down to 200 mK, or you can bite the bullet and use a dilution fridge down to around 10mK.
