I think it should serve as a wake up call for the rest of the world. Sweden has had incredible success with recycling in recent years, most notably touting the fact that they import other countries' trash to use in their recycling plants [1]. How can we recreate Sweden’s model in the US and have our own solution to the trash problem instead of giving it to China?

That line is more false than true. For the most part they are not recycling their trash, they are incinerating it.
Additionally Sweden is tiny. Trash there is brought to local recycling centers with 6 to 8 or more different bins, and people are expected to sort their trash.
How would you do that in the US? Trucks with 8 compartments? Where would you even keep that many different trash cans? The US is very large, you can't expect people to transport their recycling.

It is common in rural settings in the US for people to transport, themselves, both their trash and their recycling to a central drop off point. So there are lots of US residents that do exactly this periodically.
Curbside pickup is typically a system found in more urban portions of the US, but it is far from ubiquitous across the entirety of the US.

Why on earth not? The majority used to haul their own garbage to the town dump a just few decades ago (and some still do in smaller towns). Ubiquity of curbside pickup is relatively new -- doubly so for recycling. And recyclables are a heck of a lot more pleasant to carry in the car than rotting kitchen scraps.
We have curbside trash but no recycling and are about 15 miles (+3000 ft elevation change) to the recycling drop off center. I’ve wondered if cranking the engine on the pickup is worth it in fuel consumption.
Those bins looks pretty nice, although the balance between the comportments seems odd. (The paper compartment (2 of them?) is too large, as is the white one the right - is that for "other"?)
Not sure I'd be able to get that down my stairs though.

How is it picked up? Curbside? Curious what kind of truck they use.
Also, do you keep that in your house? Do you go outside in the winter for each item? Or do you stage the trash in the house, and sort it later?
I live in a house and each bin is emptied bi-weekly by a regular garbage truck. The two front-most compartments are actually not fixed to the bin, so the bin is lifted up, the front-most part is lifted and emptied (in a vertically split compartment), then the rest in another. (I used to watch this with the kids a lot...)
Apartments often have a similar setup but with one large bin per category in the basement. There is also another system where you are supplied with color coded garbage bags for each type of waste that you then throw in the same bin.

Actually, they are doing both. They have an incredibly high recycling rate, what is left they largely burn. Over time they have increased their recycling to the point that they have large spare capacity. Which is why they now import a comparable amount to what they burn.
How far are you traveling? It's very very very unlikely that what you are doing is actually good for the environment, unless you are making a trash run only every few months.
I can attest to this. I'm currently working my way through the college application pipeline, and my peers are laser focused on what it takes to get into a good college. Rather than pursuing what interests them, many choose challenging courses just to have a favorable transcript, and standardized test stress is an epidemic. Anxiety about "getting in" to a good school supersedes any dreams of starting a venture or pursuing an option that isn't a 4-year prestigious university.
The disappearance of new ventures can be attributed in some way to this new way of thinking. I've been told that college anxiety didn't exist 20 years ago -- maybe it's time to go back to those days. High school, in my mind, is a time to experiment and find what actually interests you: not to manifest into a homework bot that's dominated by stress.
This isn't always the case, though. The 25-year-old with life experience and a past of experimentation still exists, it's just not the norm anymore.
I've done some serious reflecting on exactly what you've said. I'm on that "safe" route. I went through the college anxiety, the GPA worries -- all of that was my mantra. To this day, I still admit to being a "resume" builder. I want things on a paper for a sense of achievement.
This scares me, though. I'm starting to realize that is not what it's about. It's about making a difference. Sure, you can indeed make a difference doing what you and I have described. A company needs people like that. But I always wonder, could I have made an even bigger difference doing something else? I'm not even talking about my education. I've even thought about this for sports.
For instance, I grew up playing baseball religiously because I had already invested a lot of my time with it. I didn't want to adhere to anything else for the fear of wasting my time. Here I am, years later, realizing I would've been an even better tennis player had I actually been open to trying something that would've given me more success, but potentially been less safe (starting a new sport in the middle of being so devoted to one already). Here I am, hitting with racquet on every volley, wishing that I had bought into the sport earlier because I know I could've been better at it than I was baseball.
What matters in addition to grades is personality and people you know. Things stay anonymous in university during undergrad for the most part, but if you are really good professors will start to notice you and then you get invited to join seminars, do internships etc. Especially in intellectually very competitive fields like math and physics everyone recognizes that tests do not really matter, they are nescessarily trivial or test only a small subset of skills you need to do research.

As the parent of a HS senior in the fall, I long for those old days (like it was when I was in HS). It's insane what we put kids through. Unintended side effects are a real thing, and they are very, very hard to know in advance.
It doesn't help that our major cities are currently set up in a way that people have to work crazy hours and have high-performing jobs to get ahead ( or just to survive in some cases ).
What if we built more housing? Brought down the cost of rent.
Not to mention the criminal price of healthcare and education.
While this quote rings true most of the time, it's important to discern whether this mindset is merely enabling mischief or allowing for an acceptable level of disobedience.
Many monumental breakthroughs were accomplished by disregarding permission, and rebellious attributes are attributed to people like Stephen Wolfram[0] and Albert Einstein. The MIT Media Lab even has an award for disobedience [1].
This mindset, though, can manifest into an unhealthy obsession with breaking the rules. An uncontrolled expectation to "ask forgiveness" can lead to murky moral territories. Where do you draw the line between accepting rebelliousness and enforcing the law?
I feel like the Dunning-Kruger effect plays a big part in the problem. Many people feel an illusory confidence in their capacity to understand a problem domain, whether they are in the role of the rebellious person or the law enforcer. Consensus with group wisdom outside of that hierarchical dynamic seems like one of the best protections against foolish rebellions or foolish rigidity, but that still leaves the problem case of what to do when the larger group wisdom is not correct. That's going to be the rarer case by definition considering how badly people tend to be at rating their own knowledge, but we also depend on those rare, capable individuals to overturn established wisdom. Or as put more succinctly by George Bernard Shaw,
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
Sexting on Snapchat is rampant in high school today (I'm a current high school student). The self-destruction principle has allowed for people to feel comfortable about sending explicit photos to eachother -- in relationships, it's almost ubiquitous.
That isn't saying that Snapchat has removed the potential of spreading explicit content. As someone mentioned in another comment, screenshotting the snap circumvents the system. It's also just as easy to take a photo of the screen with another device -- both an untraceable and permanent record of the photo.
As a whole, Snapchat has had a net positive effect for people my age. I can attest that teenagers make unwise decisions now and again, and Snapchat has helped in that those rash decisions are less likely to bite us in the future. While I don't have the data to back up the claim that hundreds of thousands of kids have been protected due to Snapchat's impermanence, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it was true. It's the most popular social network in my demographic for a reason -- it oozes the ephemeral teenage spirit.
