I had to upgrade from an M1 Pro with 16 GB to an M4 Pro with 24 GB last year because one of my work projects at the time needed multiple docker instances, and 16 GB wasn't enough. This year 24 GB isn't enough for a few AI models, but there's no budget for an upgrade...

My home "servers" don't do much but 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM is enough them, for now (Linux).

ublock origin lite is on the app stores (both mac and i-devices), and works reasonably well.

There's a button next to "gyro" labeled "hands." Click on it, and the browser will ask for the camera permission. For me (Chrome, mac), I had to click on the "cal" button next to it the first time to actually switch to the camera.

There was a building hit near the data center on the first day of the war and that took down one AZ (unfortunately, two of my three EC2 instances were in that AZ). The hit on April 1 pretty much took it all down. Fortunately I had relatively up-to-date backups (both within 24 hours before each outage) so all I lost was a little email (spam) and some libera chat logs. I've moved to ap-southeast-1, which means trading a ~ 60ms ping to ~ 110ms.

I'm sure there are businesses in the UAE, but wondering, why would one keep instances/data on a zone at risk since well over a year now.

Genuinely curious. Aside for high frequency trading where latency is so vital.

The next closest region is Tel-Aviv, I guess it's pretty obvious they won't put their workload here.

And after that it's Mumbai, 2500km away. That will easily double your latency, which is someone that you can feel in usage.

Why wouldn’t they - Israel and UAE have good relations

Israel starts new war every month, you can understand that it is risky to put your data in a data center that could be the target as well.

The Arace purchase link for the Jupiter 2 kit says it's “in stock“, but it's actually for a discount coupon. The actual system can only pre-ordered. The Sipeed web site does not say anything about shipping timelines, and the products are not offered in their AliExpress store. I think the Sipeed boards are in preorder, too.

Of course, neither of these are machines. And the average bystander probably isn't used to importing computer parts directly from China, either.

I have a machine in my hot little hands. It arrived today.

I've already posted on github my first project written on and for it today:

Sipeed have posted photos four days ago of the first batch of customer orders going out:

It won't take long for them to be available on amazon, just as D1 and JH7110 and K1 boards are now. e.g.

Interesting. Is this a full system and not just a board? This is still not quite clear to me.

Hopefully, one of these systems gets produced in such large quantities that there's some pressure to add mainline Linux support.

Deep Computing have started taking orders for the final product and the Preorders are shipping within the next 6 weeks. They will be shipping from China I expect, but it's a proper shop front.

They cost under $500/launcher: https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/one-for-history-books...

A decade ago it wasn't terrorist groups funding them.

Seems cheap to you and me but that is about the full annual income of someone from somalia. It isn't realistic for an individual to purchase one without external support.

Not if they seize a cargo ship it isn't. Criminals can afford the tools to commit crimes by using those tools to commit crimes.

Yes. I follow several remote users who default to "unlisted" posts. (To be honest, I don't know if they're unlisted or follower-only posts -- I can't tell.)

Extending the grid to power a remote village is not the same thing as the villagers running their own microgrid.
