> it's very hard to imagine interstellar travel being feasible with our current understanding.

Sometimes it's hard realize the with have a good understanding of only 5% of what composes our universe. Let's hope there's still some surprise lest for ours Centauri Dreams...

> Well because Tesla's are excellent cars and are still ranked at the top compared to the rest of the market.

whilst surely top ranked, they apparently share the top with others makers (https://www.euroncap.com/en/ratings-rewards/latest-safety-ra...) (Large Family Cars category, last two years, order by occupant protection).

> permission that they want

"they", in my case it's me. With on my own Nextcloud server, on my own LAN. It's me that want "access to everything everywhere". Difficult for me to think that is not about gate keeping from Google.

And perhaps using GrapheneOS while at it.

Which unfortunately requires... a Google phone

Unlike Apple, Google's main business isn't selling hardware, nor do they use hardware as the chokepoint for controlling their ecosystem.

It could change in future devices, but currently there's not much stopping you from doing whatever you want with your Pixel's software.

Sure, I think Pixels are great devices! The two brands I would consider are FairPhone and Pixel, to be honest.

I just find it ironic that I mostly deGoogled my tools, but still I would consider a Pixel with GrapheneOS :-).

Ah yeah but my sony xperia isn't supported!

As a user, I'd be totally fine with Apple letting me choose who can access to my iMessages.

Just like totalitarian regimes, Apple considers its users too stupid to be allowed to make choices for themselves. They must be herded like sheep towards the right path.

I assume is referring to the mean ageing demographic of those country.

Well... ZFS support baked in the kernel, surely count for something?

> Maybe not everyone is a nostalgic, but for those of us who are - I encourage doing these things now.

Is not just for nostalgia. I would've loved if my parents recorded even just a few minutes of their grandparents or great-grandparents to pass them to my children.

You’re right. I have a video recording of a my grandparent talking on the porch of his home in India where my parents grew up. He was describing the elephants that roamed the area and how he and his siblings would help tend the land. Truly a treasured clip treasured if my children’s great grandparents.

Tangentially, although there's been sporadic setbacks, as Limux[1] in 2017, there are new commitments to linux[2] that I hope will lead the way, at least in Europe.

I can tell that a few years ago a couple of NRW libraries used a SuSE variant in kiosk mode, apparently not everyone found that great, as some of the ones I regularly visit now have Windows in kiosk mode, with the usual set of Office, Adobe and other packages.
