No, so you should drop whatever you're doing and get right on that.

Oh ... so you were expecting somebody else to service you for free?

Maybe someone would've done that study for the PhD.

Hey, you sound touchy. I guess you're letting your biases show. I think the notion is correct, but I understand the "evidence based life." To be sincere about rigorousness, you need to check the the ideas you like as much as the ideas you don't like. But anyhow thanks for letting your biases show for free.

Betteridge's Law applies to questions in the title. I don't see a question mark at the moment, so it doesn't apply.

It was, though. "Will Yahoo's patents go to a troll?" or something close to that.

Parachutes actually increase the number of crashes, since instead of attempting a landing, the plane hits the ground.

Parachutes increase the cost of ownership, as they have to be replaced every 10 years or so.

A lot of the people buying Cirrus airplanes are taking off into marginal weather and just assume the parachute will save them when their luck runs out.

Killer Business use of Wine: when you have a linux farm, and you really need that one Windows accounting/enterprise/billing app, and you don't want to manage/license a Windows Server.

I would not be surprised if fish have feelings or even emotions.

The link is worth reading. Despite being short, it summarizes several reasons why non-humans are likely more similar than not to humans that have been developed in the past 2 decades, with no published counter-examples.

The above comment is very cavalier with the facts on pricing and availability of airplane upgrades.

Missing the key point. Aircraft are updated with newer avionics after leaving the factory quite routinely.

Considering Southwest currently has 122 737-300s in service, they wouldn't upgrade them if it wasn't available at a reasonable cost:

Yeah, San Carlos air traffic controllers get pissy when you announce northbound over the 101 and you're really flying due west, with the sun in your face even.

If you really call it "the 101", they will peg you as being from SoCal.

When you're parking/laundering money from the PRC, all you care about is asset preservation and a low profile.

Can somebody translate the above post into English? I can't understand a single sentence.

Okay…

1) When Free Basics launched India, the problems with it turned out to be even worse than I expected. I wrote about how the local marketing (‘Free Facebook’) and Zuck’s post (‘farmers getting weather information’) had completely different messaging.

2) I pointed to another article that dove into these issues about who actually uses Free Basics.

3) The reporter who wrote the article this HN thread is about (“How India Pierced…”) couldn’t find a single person who was introduced to the internet through Free Basics.

Does that help?

Singapore currently has one of the highest standards of living in the world, so bargains are few.

It is nearly 100% ethnic Chinese, and Chinese prefer family-managed companies, so you would have some culture-shock.

There are some web and ISP companies there, so that's your best bet for a typical cosmopolitan workplace.

Condos are over $1 million each for residents, so housing is expensive.

Anyway, it sounds like you need to do more homework before moving there.

74% is a lot less than 100%.
