Including gamblers putting their families at risk.

They also do due to alcohol, substance abuse and other addictions.

you're right, so why are we creating more ways for people to lose so much money?

Bit of a tangent from your comment but I heard the argument once that, 'well people who are already addicted would find a way to do it illegally, at least doing it this way makes it legal and protects them from people like the mafia' to which I agree but it also makes it easier for people who aren't already addicted to become addicted with how often it's advertised. It's like saying 'well listen, those kids were going to see others smoking cigarettes so instead of getting ripped off buying cigarettes from older kids who would mark it up, we started offering safe cigarettes at the school. They don't have to smoke them but at least when they do they'll be smoking safely.'

To a degree I'd argue gambling can be more insidious - it's quite hard to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars being an alcoholic or drug addict, and also quite a bit easier to hide from your family (until your husband or wife sees the credit card/bank statement I suppose).

There's a reason all of those + gambling are prohibited in Islam.

It looks like 1:1 iPhone copy minus camera bump.

All phones are just rectangles. The no camera bump is the most important part. It is completely flat on both sides.

So was it really a passion project if it affects them anyhow? It's like saying that concept of dynamite fishing affects passionate anglers.

I really struggle with this argument that I see everywhere lately, especially when we see many vibecoders clearly desperate for clout who post "decomps" and automated translations of works they clearly have no interest in and just want to claim a spot on the wall of fame. I'm talking about people bulk-translating old ROMs and not even booting them up to see if they work before releasing them in the wild for instance.

Their lazy cloud-chasing is normal but my high-effort clout-chasing is lame and makes me a fraud?

We're social animals. We like doing cool stuff and getting social status for it. We like breaking new ground. We like going where nobody has gone before.

Is it irrational and emotional? Maybe. Being human is being irrational and emotional sometimes. It's fine.

I am no one in anything, the thing is I love spending hours writing code, fixing some weird issue somewhere in the code, and then see it working as it intended. But now I can just put up some text and the whole thing is generated. Using my thoughts, the things I learnt, and applying them are not needed.

I can see there are still lot to do in the generated code, but I also feel something went away, Now I start working on it, and realize I'm reminded I just have to dictate what I need and it will be generated

It's like I have to pay for the best gun in the game to win, otherwise I can't just progress. Then why am I playing the game for?

Of course, passion here meant feeling good about putting effort into something which doesn't have obvious external life benefits such as money or visibility. If an LLM can just knock it out then it's hard to feel good about putting that effort in.

I don't see why it wouldn't, passion does not exists in a vacuum.

So it's about visibility and not passion?

This idea that if you want recognition for your work you aren't passionate is literally insane. Humans are social creatures by nature, the two aren't in any way exclusive.

> It's like saying that concept of dynamite fishing affects passionate anglers.

Are you implying that it does not?

If dynamite fishing were deployed on the scale the AI infra is, with VC capital and government backing, we'd run out of fish in a week.

The concept doesn't affect much, deployment of it affects a lot.

Well if dynamite fishers show up in your favorite fishing spot you might want to consider moving somewhere else at least.

I get what you’re going for but that’s a poor analogy. If I was a passionate angler and someone showed up dynamite fishing at the same spot, the activity I’m passionate about is ruined.

It's not totally worthless. It shows that recreational usage may lead to cardiovascular issues. Is it from the THC itself, way of administration, eating crap on munchies or having no motivation to move your ass is something for another paper.

Or is it a statistical artifact from crap control of confounders, who knows?

Not worthless for the anti-cannabis lobby, I suppose.

If one person reads up how bad it is for them thanks to some random paper then it's not worthless.

How does this thing work? Can humans learn how to write like AI and vice versa without being detected?

i think it would be difficult to learn how to reproduce certain phenomena that the models often exhibit. this article breaks down some of them: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50223647

Messaging alternatives are unfortunately useless if people you want to chat with use other apps. Pretty much the same with mentioned Mastodon instances. Duck Duck Go isn't very good compared even to modern Google slop search. OSM is good for hikes but lacks heavily when you want to find businesses, restaurants etc. around the city. All of the above is hard to replace with alternatives.

Beeper.com is promising. It rolls a lot of the big messaging apps into one. You can add 5 or 6 accounts under the free plan.

I had a Tidal subscription for over a year. I love that they pay the artists way more. Unfortunately Tidal looks similar Spotify, but is somehow janky and less polished. Sharing music was a hassle. I had to go search my friends shares by typing the artist and song into tidal because most of them use Spotify. Spotify is the typical BigCo spreading enshittification far and wide, but not enough people care to change that.

Often the most important part of an app is the user base. That is why inferior apps with a gigantic community are hard to replace.

Steam Deck sells a tiny fraction of overall Steam games, in most of the world they are not fairly priced and Steam Deck doesn't have any focus on performance at all, they slap Deck verified on everything, even stuff that barely works. Source: I have Steam Deck since the launch. Nintendo might suck in many ways but in Europe Switch 2 is 60% of Deck price, provides way better fidelity in pretty much every title and I can play cheaply by just buying physical games and selling them after. Second hand market is great through Vinted. I barely pay any money for a game after selling it and sometimes I even earn money. Digital versions of indie game prices are basically identical in both storefronts. And the docking experience and coop play is unmatched on Switch. Steam Deck is ridiculously shitty in that regard. To be honest I still use it just because of Emudeck, if not for that I would barely touch it.

They can't ban or brick your console which would prevent you from using it, they just ban your access to their online systems which is understandable. Every vendor does this.

Judging by how full of slop is eshop I doubt they even look at what they allow.
