> Unfortunately life displaced me to my least favorite city :)

Warsaw?

Probably Gdańsk, the typical neighbors conflicts between Gdynia and Gdańsk are common here, since the cities are very close to each other and thus compete for the same resources

I personally enjoy each of the cities and the Kashubia and Kociewie surroundings, it’s just each of these places has its own soul and unique culture

It’s better, but still worse than OAI’s models in my experience

It’s called conditional logic. IF Anthropic is right THEN they are slave owners. You don’t need to agree with Anthropic to state that proposition.

Conditional logic doesn't work when talking to the general public. Either way, still waiting for the pope quote.

Conditional logic works just fine!

No, because in a social context, for people who understand implied intent and implied beliefs instead of just on-its-face logical propositions, it is an admission that the antecedent has a reasonable chance of being true. In social communication, if you don't believe something is possible, you simply dismiss any conditional statements following from it. Dispassionately arguing in a logical and objective manner is only possible for a tiny sliver of the population. The rest will get very angry and uncomfortable around such talk.

I think Apple's top-down approach is showing here. Google is more bottom-up, which has its flaws, but it's more suited for cases like this one. I seems that unless one of Apple's higher-ups notices a problem nobody is going to do anything.

For example, Android and Google Assistant has had excellent support for Polish for more than a decade. Siri still doesn't support Polish at all, even though all of Apple's AI suppliers support Polish perfectly well...

Do you collect metrics from those BYOC clusters? If so, I’m assuming you push them, not pull them? That would seem to follow the same direction as the cluster operator config syncs (i.e. the direction in which connections are made, not in which data flows).

Yep, all pushed based directly from cluster! It helps that most of the observability ecosystem is converging on this? Even Prometheus, while pull-based inside the cluster, can remote-write to external storage, and that's the shape we'd pick even in that world. (we use datadog right now)

The Romans couldn't manufacture new cash by flipping bits in computers' memory

They did the equivalent in their time which was cutting the precious metal content of their coinage.

I think the point of mentioning Codex was that the author of the post has no relationship with Anthropic, even as a user.

It's said to imply they have no bias. But someone using Codex or AI agents heavily already have a bias here, just to be clear. Because the discussion isn't just about bun/anthropic/zig/rust, but also between AIs role in coding. So them touting their use of Codex, while not Claude, can still be a bias, especially in the direction they're trying to absolve themselves from.

I doubt it, there is a much simpler explanation: virtually all English-speaking Catholics dig Tolkien.

Lewis and Tolkien hanging out at pubs in Oxford remains the apex of nerdy Christian geekery.

I had a look and yeah, Popes quoting Tolkien does seem to be a thing, at least in the last couple of decades.

It’s a whole thing. The priest at my high school was way into Tolkien and, more interestingly to me as a teenager: the Wolfenstein series of games!

The priest at your high school? This is a set of words I’ve never heard in the same sentence. Where was this? If you don’t mind me asking.

Australia! Catholic high school, though in practice amusingly secular

I went to a school run by monks[0]. Technically at least two were also priests (although I wasn't sure of the distinction then and I'm still not sure decades later.)

[0] Alas, a dodgy branch of monks who have since encountered many legal issues around child care, etc., as have at least one of my teachers.

"Earth is flat" is an objective statement. "I experience consciousness" is subjective, similarly to "I am experiencing pain". If someone tells me "pain doesn't exist" while I know it exists (because I have experienced it), I can be certain that that person is wrong. Even though I can't prove it to him.

Thomas Nagel's definition of consciousness is pretty good: "an organism has conscious mental states if and only if there is something that it is like to be that organism—something it is like for the organism."

What do you find good about that?

The like-ness properly capture in one go the first-person and the phenomenal aspects of consciousness.
