Ask HN: Isn't Bluetooth location scanning a privacy risk?

So I recently updated my phone to Android Pie and it asked me if I want to enable WiFi and Bluetooth location scanning. (As separate options, default yes to both)

It got me thinking. The idea of WiFi location scanning is that the person's router is normally at the same place all the time. So it could be used to improve location accuracy.

But with Bluetooth, if the device is a headphone set. Then the user will be moving around. If the database picks up what their home location is, then couldn't someone with access to a geolocation API, find out where they live?

The google reference for their geolocation api only talks about WiFi however: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/geolocation/intro

But it just requires a MAC address.

If there's a similar one for bluetooth would there be any privacy issues?

It used to be an issue but modern mobile OSes rotate the IDs to prevent this.

There however might be an issue w/ your accessories.
