Although I am an individual contributor Software Engineer, I have been interested in leadership and people management for a while.
I received good feedback about my communication and soft skills from my managers and peers. I was going to be the direct manager of a couple of interns this summer, but all internships got cancelled.
Half a year ago I had a clear path in mind to transition to management. Today not anymore.
I'm concerned about what opportunities I will have in the future. I doubt my company will trust someone without experience to manage people remotely. I'm also worried I might set myself up for failure. Even if things go "back to normal", I imagine many people will push to work remotely. I envision a future where partial or fully remote teams are the norm.
Does anyone have experience transitioning to management in remote first or remote only companies? What have you seen working and not working? Will companies need to accept remote work and adapt their management practices and structures accordingly?
