I predicted at least a decade ago that wide usage of open source would not only bring more 'duct tape' jobs (although I didn't use this term), but it would lower the average salary, because duct tape jobs don't really require as much skill or education.
It hasn't happened as quickly as I thought it would, but it definitely is happening.
As a company owner, why would I pay someone to write core technology when I can just get it for free and hire someone much less money to make changes to it?
