The two (or three if you retain padding) additional characters are symbols and can cause issues in many places. Base64-url and other variants exist for this reason, but there is no single base64 that works everywhere.


There's no "single base62 that works everywhere" either. So while there's valid criticism to be had of base64, I still don't see how this choice is better.
