In my opinion it's seen (at least where I've worked) as better for the following reasons:

1. Better visibility of progress and blocking issues - this is a big plus to senior mgmt and if you're technical it will help you alot that they understand you're making progress rather than being a blackbox that they hope delivers something in 6 months time

2. More adaptable to change - every project changes, the lnger it runs the less suitable it is at the end. Agile/Scrum theoretically allows you to change course better (not that you couldn't do it under waterfall..)

You do make a good point that it can be a dream for micro managers if you're unlucky enough to work for one, there are many potential faults but it depends on who's in the team frankly. The standups can become mundane and useless if people can't be honest about blockers or where they need help as well.
