Ask HN: What Are You Up To? (December 2021)
24 points by david927 on Dec 1, 2021 | hide | past | favorite | 20 comments
What are you working on? Any news in your life? Any new ideas you're thinking about?

I have been building more integrations and specific categories for my job board. I have narrowed down the focus to just jobs in Europe / Remote and I'm kind of hoping that this pays off.

Most recent section that seems to have paid off is to display jobs with Salary information

I am working on algo's for automated measurement and assessment of carbon footprint. If anyone's into this as well, or just curious, shoot me an email, would be very glad to know you.

Hey there! Carbon footprints of what?

(Sourcing and manufacturing of) Raw materials and/or products.

I've been working on a website (and maybe app in the future) to keep track of routes that I've completed at the Rock Climbing gym. I currently have it set up with a list of all the boulders at my gym, and I keep track of which routes I have finished, with a difficulty and fun score, and a description that I sometimes use.

It has some graphs and stuff, mainly to show me how my sessions are going, and if I've been improving over time. Recently I started climbing at a difficulty higher than I previously had, so maybe it is helping? Who knows!

Been trying to work through interpreters/compilers/PL with the idea that it will help me solve many different problems.

I thought it would go quicker but it's taken some time to let the ideas sink in.

I'm planning an engine swap on my '99 Isuzu with some more recent Subaru engines and drivetrains. Looking for the perfect candidate swap on Copart and local junkyards.

I'm reading David William Plummers book, it's absolutely excellent! After finishing the "Hello Internet" podcast, I'm now listening through the back catalogue of "Cortex" which I also find interesting, if not as entertaining as HI.

Side projects are confined to something that can be done in either 3 hours before bed, or are work-related enough that I can excuse spending a few hours on them during a week, which is to say, not often.

I got an FDN rating for the year. Looking at other jobs. Everything seems even worse than this one. All the internal jobs want people split between teams or roles. External jobs that meet my requirements and I'm qualified for are sparse.

I'm currently culturing and growing mushrooms (gourmets). Seems to be going well so far, only some contaminated batches (no lab).

Did you use a still air box? They're easy to DIY and make a big difference in preventing contamination

I built a flow hood sort of thing with a HEPA filter. It works pretty well. I assume I'll have some losses to contamination when culturing from spores, as they likely exist with/on the spores. I can still usually get 2 or 3 out of five agar dishes. I also bought some liquid liquid cultures that I believe had the contaminates in them already since some were fine and it's pretty difficult to contaminate using a sterile needle injecting into a sterile sealed bag (waiting on replacements now).

I'm working on two things:

CxO Industries (https://cxo.industries) which aims to help founders start successful companies.

TradeQ (https://tradeq.xyz): automated crypto trader.

CxO is the primary project I'm working on. Hoping to launch early next year!

Good luck on the launch next year!

Working on https://Hitsnag.com. A tool that connects your inbox to your favorite productivity tools that lets you convert emails into tasks on Trello, events in your Notion, and notes in your Google Docs.

I just ported a handy epoch time conversion CLI tool from internal C++ to public Golang.

I'm building a cross platform desktop app for accessing FHIR databases (healthcare space) using SQL-like commands.

I'm building it using .NET MAUI Blazor, which is the new Microsoft cross platform desktop app builder - similar to Electron.

I’ve been working on a passwordless auth service for stripe users. https://neologin.co

Do you think most companies will fire unvaccinated? I had longcovid for 14 months (with heart problems) and won't get the shot under any circumstances. My employer said they would fire me December, but now they've pushed that back.

Other than thinking of switching to contract work if that becomes a reality... I'm looking for ideas that relate to anti-censorship, decentralized finance, or that subvert what I see as increasing authoritarianism by governments around the world. If what they're doing in Austria/Germany comes here, I want to prepare to go off-grid. Anyone else feel similar? What are you planning to do in 2022?

I was in a similar situation. They gave me a November date, but the 5th circuit stayed OSHA's ETS so they gave it up, at least temporarily. I absolutely want to get out of the suburbs and start homesteading.

i have created a simple server for self hosting gitgub pages, i am preparing for show hn post tomorrow not sure how it would be recieved.
