Ask HN: How does e-yuan handle offline transactions?
14 points by mateo1 on March 7, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 3 comments
I am trying to find information on the technical inner workings of the payment system that China developed and claims it can complete transactions while completely offline.

I can imagine that it might work for limited amount of time with something like a secure enclave until it eventually synchronises with a a central network but I am curious to know exactly what they do.

I found some documents about it a while ago, I'll see what I can turn up.

Careful what you click on when researching DCEP/E-CNY. You have been warned.

Here's a VirusTotal graph I made based on a pdf about the e-yuan. Not saying it's a virus, but some of the things on that graph are, so do tread lightly. You can safely view the graph of linked content without worrying about getting infected. You will need a VirusTotal account, but they are free on the low end.

Here's Google's cache of the same pdf, which renders in browser but not as a pdf, apparently. The header includes a direct link to the pdfs, or you can grab it from the link itself, if you're so inclined.

I’m curious about this graph. What’d be the purpose of infecting this PDF?

Now I’ll be worried about opening random PDFs in the future…

Tracking pixels are just the start. A/B testing different versions of tracking pixels to track leaks, for example.
