Apple sued after loud Amber Alert on AirPods said to damage Texas boy's hearing (reuters.com)

Wow, I was expecting some mild, perhaps temporary hearing loss. It was so loud, it ruptured his eardrum, caused tinitus and he now wears a hearing aid.

That’s the claim. The article doesn’t state whether the boy actually has these problems and, if so, whether they were (conclusively) caused by the AirPods (my guesses would be “yes” and “wouldn’t dare say”)

The only mention I could find about music causing it is https://betterhearingofaustin.com/can-loud-noise-rupture-you... which stages “A sudden very loud noise can cause an eardrum to tear or rupture. The noise intensity to rupture an eardrum would have to be very loud, usually 165 decibels or more. This would correspond to the sound intensity of a gunshot at close range, fireworks or extremely loud music.”

165dB is extremely loud.

Does anyone else think the low power alert noise is too loud as well? I always get startled when it happens and my ears hurt afterward.

it's not like my ears hurt, but it is annoying when I fall asleep while listening to something (it's a habit I have, I know, maybe not the best) and if the timing is bad it can pull me right out some transitory sleep phase. would be nice if they were a bit smarter about that signal...

Normally I find these frivolous but I can attest to those alerts being really, really loud lol. I get why they have to be loud though, just maybe have an 80% setting...

That said, if they can prove it was really the AirPods then by all means, Apple should face consequences... at the same time it seems like this would have happened a lot more, no? Not an apple or "hearing" expert but isn't there a limit to what the AirPods could even produce?

Apple CANNOT do sound....period. they fail it on every single platform....my mac is terrible... Bluetooth sucks....airpods suck....
