Conservatives are too keen on money to win the culture war (ft.com)

The whole point of a culture war is to buy votes as cheaply as possible. It only exists because people are trying to get political power to keep a hold of the money and power they have.

Scaring old people with tall tales about "the others" and frightening changes to society is just the cheapest way to buy a vote.

The likes of Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak don’t enter the careers that shape a society’s norms and values because these careers aren't financially lucrative.

Those that do are less motivated by money, tend to be more left wing and as a result influence the values of the arts organisations, academic institutes and public broadcasters they pursue careers in.

Applies not just to the UK but other countries too. This is the first time I've seen this analysis and had never thought of it before. I hope this is relevant on Hacker News apologies if it isn't.
