Largely for my own future reference, a comment by dang explaining the fragility of online discussion and hence the importance of civility:
A forum like HN is perennially teetering on the edge of a downward spiral and can easily burn itself to a crisp. The founding idea of the site was to try to stave that fate off, at least for a while.
