It's true that we treat children like property. In fact, not just children, but anyone who's powerless.

I think this is why so much of our fiction revolves around children, their growing-up stories, and how they were mistreated. We, or at least some of us, recognize the great injustice visited upon the young, and so we write it into our stories.
