You're right that there are inefficiencies, but almost entirely communication overhead (pointless meetings, synchronous work, etc).

What AI brings is the ability to bridge those communication gaps. Instead of bugging the engineer people can ask the AI for a summary of completed and ongoing work. Instead of needing so many meetings the AI can coordinate when people check in with it.
