How does pone drive 20 hours in the wrong direction, when trying to go to an appointment 19km away?

What must go wrong when you are allowed to drive and not realize that mistake after at most an hour or so?

I once drove 20 miles the wrong way because it was a long road with a few exits and it looks like you’re following the GPS because it tells you to get off on an exit and take a u turn. If you miss the recalculating part you can miss a few exits before you realize what is happening.

I read the article, but still, how can anyone making such a mistake be deemed sane enough to still be allowed to drive a car?

Alas, I'm far from 85, hard to imagine making that kind of error.

Perhaps this is the kind of flag that gets someone to stop driving.

I remember this story being about a German woman but still ending in Croatia. Anyway I was infuriated by the media telling this story as a joke although if true it's clearly an issue of dementia that miraculously ended well
