Are you truly energy independent if you are exporting and the corporations that profit from exporting control your government?

Plenty of famines in history where food was still being exported because the people suffering and the people profiting from exports weren't the same people.

This led to the famous observation that democracy prevents famines. So I guess the question is to what degree the US is a democracy.
