This is a discussion of the rational justification the two aren't really connected. we continue because it's hard to think of something that is more strongly selected against, in evolutionary terms, than not wanting to do so. we are bred for survival. all our ancestors survived long enough to have offspring... so we continue because, generation after generation, that is what is selected for. rationality isn't that relevant.
