That is basically what it all boils down to. Patent as much as you can so you can defend yourself, and eventually make a cross-license deal that doesn't cost too much money. And just maybe, it might make you a little money. My personal favorite is the patent on a cell phone ringing and vibrating at the same time. For a long time most other phones would alternate.
