Even Shingy called chatgpt "chat" when he went on Ed Zitron's show. It was very weird to hear from a guy who has been around tech world for such a long time even if he's non technical.
I'm a pretty seasoned software dev, but I've also kept the frontier AI race at arms length from myself. I run Claude alongside my day to day workflow but don't really get overly concerned about the latest and greatest models, as I'm not leaning on it to do my job for me I suppose.
In my mind I'm after a stable tool, not wanting to dabble in the bleeding edge. I did that back in the early days of web coding and have settled into a much more subdued kind of industry/life in that regard.
Everyone calls it chat. I am technical and even I’ve come around to calling it that because that is what everyone, including very technical people, call the product.

What is going to differentiate this above any of (1) my phone that can use any AI provider and I can already carry around the home, (2) a set of smart speakers that can talk to an AI provider like google home/homepod/alexa, or (3) my computer?
You absolutely can just press a button on a phone to instantly start an AI voice conversation. Heck, you don't even need to press a button in a lot of cases.
I'm sorry but that is just not correct. Androids and iPhones both have a way to start chats with their ai assistant from a hardware button or even always-on listening. My airpods, sony, and even my cheapest amazon bluetooth headphones all have a button to tap or hold that allows ai voice conversation to start. Even my Sonos and not very smart JBL speakers for beach days have the option to start an ai voice conversation and most home-based smart speakers include a listen word that doesn't even require a button.
Some of them are right next to housing. Huntington beach has wells adjoining homes near the beach. Look up the prices of the houses if you want to really go crazy
Does your garmin watch not charge? If you call them and are nice they'll probably give you a heavily discounted replacement. Mine died on me randomly and they gave me a new 900 series forerunner for $125
It charges if and only when it wants to. And I've been a Garmin enthusiast for a while and been through a few devices already though I am getting sick of the charging unreliability.
Like if I am really careful I can plug my watch into the computer and it might start charging in a few minutes. Or like last night I made two tries and neither of them worked. I want to be able to plug it in to charge and completely take it for granted that I will come back later and it will be charged. I might wind up attempting to charge the watch for four whole hours in a day as it is now.
Personally I am very traumatized by USB connections that don't work and when I hear the sound of a USB device dropping out on my Windows computer I feel like a veteran who thinks a misfiring car is a gunshot. I want a charging connector which is 100% reliable and I want Garmin to pay me $10,000 if I ever hear that sound because of their poorly designed connector.
So I want a replacement watch that charges reliably, I don't want a cheap newer watch that has the same improperly designed connector. Next week I am going to be off grid at an event where I'm expected to have a reliable watch and hoping I can charge it successfully off a power bank at least once.
Agreed. I’m on my 4th Garmin and the charging cable last about a year or two at most. That said, for me it has always just been the cable and the watch is self last forever. All 4 of my old Garmin’s still work if I get them out of a drawer and charge them up. Now I just small USBC -> Garmin adapter's that normally get lost before they wear out.
I would love a standards based wireless option here.
which "just works", like I plug the watch in and it charges... just like that! It's amazing though that Garmin has normalized "it just doesn't work" for its own charging cables.
(2) As for @Cindy HN is boring. I mean, people on Mastodon often assume there has to be something wrong with HN (like there are white people there? somebody cis posted there once? there are people there who care about making money?) but never seem to find the smoking gun. I mean, I could write about salacious things on HN but nobody would believe it. Like one reason I post a lot less to HN these days is that I am doing other things!
I worked at a startup that was briefly a unicorn and ended up burning cash because they did exactly what you said of focusing a lot on tooling and dev environment. It was great but way over the top for what we needed. I learned a lot of good practices for myself but they've been limping along for a while and most of my former team was laid off or saw what was coming and left before it hit them.
I think our QAs do pay attention a bit more than that, but some of the things they do flag as issues show (to me) that they don't pay a lot of attention until after we've merged and released or we'd get some of their bugs as requirements on tickets instead of as bugs to resolve between QA deploy and before we go to prod.
